Too bad we can't put those links into the CPAPpopedia.

DIY ONE PIECE boil and bite

Postby snork1 on Mon Jun 05, 2006 9:05 am

Someone did a GOOD job of making a DIY tongue guide out of ONE PIECE, without "welding", and had excellent photos and instructions. I am not even sure if it was on this forum or the "other one".

Someone is looking for those instructions and I just can't seem to find the photos.

I made the one piece style myself, and it turned out "good enough" but not good enough to use as an example and I must say the existing instructions, wherever they might be, are darn good.

Can anyone else find THAT particular reference so I can pass it along?
Thanks!

snork, I remember seeing those pictures and the instructions for the one piece thingie. Just can't remember where. I think it was on this board. I poked through some of the links and put every word I could think of in Search...haven't come across it yet. If you (or anyone) find it, please let me know. The guy did a beautiful job with the pictures and the step-by-step instructions, as I recall.

I was using a chin strap because of snoring and mouth breathing. I had it so tight that it left lines on my cheeks. The thought of taping seemed like a really bad idea. I had black dreams of suffocating in my sleep.

Then I tried taping using Dermiform hypoallergenic tape. Worked like a charm. No skin problems. No more snoring and mouth breathing when I roll over onto my back. The Dermiform roll is now gone and J&J has stopped making the tape. What a bummer. I am using a 3M hypoallergenic tape with good success. I think I have located a supplier with Dermiform tape. I will know for sure once the tropical storm aftermath clears Florida.

I have another post which lists the tapes which appear to be equivalent to Dermiform.

Taping a new way

Postby gregwest on Tue May 29, 2007 5:09 am

I came up with this idea and it works for me.
I had tried to tape my whole mouth shut but that freaked me out.

Now I use two pieces of tape. just tape the corners of your mouth with about 3/4 inch of tape. I place it vertically on each side.
You can still breath in emergency and even talk.

This has stopped air leak and drooling.

mouth guard works!

Postby jilkurtz on Mon Jun 11, 2007 1:37 pm

Thank you SO much for this list of tips and hints.

I have tried the chin strap and mouth taping, with neither working very well. I read the article on the mouthguard by freelans - the pictures were terrific - and it worked!

I had allowed several hours to make the fitting and instead it only took a few minutes.

I still needed to use a chin strap last night, but I got a solid 8 hours sleep for the first time in DECADES!

Thanks so much to everyone for all the tricks and tips you post here. They are invaluable for a newbie.

Dr. Norris,

I am more impressed by the inventiveness of your "Mouthplug" and have started a new thread at viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38869 .
