nose breathe dental appliance

Post by Ellen » Sat Apr 29, 2006 11:00 am

anyone out there try the nose breathe or nose breathe for heavy snorers from quietsleep.com

What kind of results can a person get from this vs taping mouth??

Would love some feedback before I purchase the kit.

Ellen,

This topic came up again recently. Best way I can think of to find it is using the search facility (2nd button from left at top).

Enter "Nosebreathe" or "Dr Sue" and see what pops up.

The only apparent supporter of this device seems to be a poster called Kermit who appears every few months to remind us how great the device is. Sadly few agree with him. So "kermit" is also worth serching on (as a registered poster)

Cheers

dsm, I agree that not many on here who tried the Nose Breathe device were happy with it. Fortunately it has a money back guarantee, if I recall correctly, which not many things in the good old world of CPAP have. I guess people would lose the shipping fee, but that's pretty usual.

I don't remember Kermit coming back every few months to remind anyone how "great" the device was. He came back perhaps a couple of times to offer suggestions when others had difficulty with it. As far as I know, he had no connection with Dr. Sue or any reason to try to get people to order it. Kermit was simply someone who had battled mouth air leaks as so many of us do, and was sharing info about something that worked for him.

Kermit used to post regularly on the TalkAboutSleep message board and another, now defunct, apnea board. He stopped posting much about a year ago when his increasing work hours plus being the sole caregiver for his invalid elderly father started taking up most of his time. Kermit was/is a really nice person whom I admire.

I'm not posting this as a chide, dsm. You had no way of knowing anything about Kermit as you probably were not reading apnea message boards back when Kermit was a regular poster. Just wanted to offer a bit more insight into him. When he posted about the Nose Breathe here, he truly was just sharing info, as we all do, about something that worked for him. As you say, sadly, it didn't work well for most others who reported on it.

RG,

I'm glad you provided that info as yes I had formed a negative impression of Kermit because the only posts I saw were occasional & usually offering high praise for the Nosebreathe.

I also believe Dr Sue is a very genuine person who has great faith in his appliance. After my experience with it - and reading & PM with some others, I could not bring myself to recommend it to anyone but as you have rightly pointed out, there is a money back guarantee.

I guess Kermit was one of the lucky ones for who it really helped.

Thanks

Nosebreathe

Ianswered this on another thread back when I first tried the NoseBreathe but do not remember the name of thread - sorry!!

It will be two weeks this Friday that I have used the NoseBreathe every night. I purchased the upper and the lower, in the event I required both but am THRILLED TO REPORT I do fabulous with the upper mouthpiece only. It fits like a glove and I am amazed at how it works. Mine came from Dr. Sue and it works so great, and the service was so great - that is who I would recommend.

It's hard to understand just how this rather simple mouthpiece can make such a lipseal, but it sure does. Dr. Sue sends you a kit to take an impression that you send back to him and he makes soft plastice mouthpiece according to impression - with a small "ledge" to rest your tongue on. Once you turn your machine on, I think the pressurized air going down your windpipe "pulls" your lips against mouthpiece - thus creating the seal -

If you will go to NoseBreathe on the net, you can read the specifics on Dr. Sue's device.

I am totally THRILLED WITH THE PRODUCT and it will pay for itself very quickly in tape costs!! Remember, my big problem was sensitivity to all tape, no matter what kind I used and I had such serious "tape burn" all around my mouth that I have been unable to go out in sun - even with large brimmed hat - as the skin around my mouth burned so bad - and working in the yard is one of my greatest pleasures.....it really sucked - I couldn't even sit with husband outside in am for breakfast............

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS NOSEBREATHE APPLIANCE TO EVERYONE -

I also just had an eyetooth worked on that was VERY SENSITIVE and I was quite sure the mouthpiece "pressure" would bother that tooth. Dr. Sue says to "break in" the appliance, as it may make teeth sore - I wore it appx 3 hours first night then woke up to let dog out and did not put mouthpiece back in (shuddered and taped!!) Next night I never woke up until am and the mouthpiece didn't bother my teeth, gums, or anything. Have used it every night since then and I couldn't be a happier papper!!

I know they don't work for everyone, but it sure works for me. The other advantage is that my husband would inevitably ask me a question after my mouth was taped and I couldn't answer him. One night he was trying to tell me my mask was leaking and I actually was awake and trying to figure out the leak - he kept shaking me because I wasn't answering and I finally had to PULL TAPE OFF QUICKLY to answer him - that REALLY aggravated my already "tape burned" skin.

Happy with NoseBreathe in Wyoming

Ellen

I ordered this device months ago because I was mouth breathing very badly even with chinstrap. The worst part of it was the mold because I gag very easily and couldn't even put it all the back like I was supposed to. I got with Dr. Sue, sent him some pictures of the resulting mold and he said it would be fine. He was very good about returning emails and I also talked to him on the phone.

The difference was amazing! It was a definite improvement whereas before after starting to use my CPAP, I noticed no improvement at all. All I can say is, I rarely ever fall asleep on my keyboard at work anymore. I was getting into work at 7am whereas before I barely made it in by 9am. I had noticeably more energy.

I still get tired but that is partly because I've gained quite a bit of weight for some reason. I haven't really changed anything so it's weird. I thought sleep apnea contributed to weight gain but it seems the cure has. Also I have weird sleep schedule. I'm usually tired throughout the day but get a "second wind" in the evening and want to stay up all night.

At first I got a lot of saliva (wet pillow) but it seems I've adjusted and now I don't notice it anymore. I didn't notice this "lip seal" that was described. Actually as I am a mouth breather, I even notice my mouth open. It's the tongue being held against the roof of the mouth and/or back to seal the throat that seems to be the key. Just my opinion.

It seems many don't like it but it made all the difference in the world for me.
