If you're worried by mouth taping - read this:

Post by ozij » Tue May 20, 2008 6:06 am

I've just finished posting this on another thread, but figured it was worthy of its own thread for the next time someone is shocked.

The following mask The Oracle was cleared for sale in the USA by the FDA.
Image

This mask fits into your mouth, and has you plug your nose with nose plugs. That's the mouthpiece up there in the picture. The mask is is supplied with the nasal plugs - and they are mandatory, not optional for the first 2 weeks.

http://www.fphcare.co.nz/osa/pdf/HC452/185043485.pdf
1) Attach Headgear by re-connecting one of the clips (J).
2) Pull the SnapFlapTM Cover (A) back to the retracted position.
3) Insert the SoftSeal (B) into the mouth, one side at a time. It should sit in the gum region between the cheeks and the teeth. Move your lips around so they fit comfortably all the way over the
SoftSeal.
4) Return the SnapFlapTMCover (A) back to its normal position, and adjust the mask tightness by rotating the Dial (C) as shown.
5) With Headgear (I) sitting loosely around base of neck, re-connect clip.
6) Adjust Headgear with VelcroTM tab (l1) to remove slack.
7) Use Nasal Plugs (H) for first two weeks of use. Refer to Nasal Plug Instructions.
Nasal Plugs
Nasal Plugs are used to aid in the training of natural mouth breathing. It is optional to discontinue use after the first two weeks. However, use Nasal Plugs if you experience any of the following:
Oral dryness Nasal leak Poor sleep Quality

Instructions for Use
1) Your Nasal Plugs (H) come in three sizes, S / M / L, as indicated on the joining strip.
2) Pull medium sized silicone Nasal Plugs from the central joining strip and insert into nose so that
the base of the plugs are just inside the nostrils.
3) The plug should fit comfortably inside the nose and should seal off the flow of air.
If not content, try the other sizes.
4) Use the OracleTM Oral Mask as you normally would, with the Nasal Plugs inserted.
Look at that mouthpiece and headgear. Look at the instructions for putting the mask in your mouth, and tying it around you neck. Imagine adding nasal plugs, and ask yourself which is easier for a concious, otherwise healthy person to deal with: that, or a piece of tape with pull off flaps.

Thanks for caring enough to warn us. We care enough to let you know that you may want to re-think that warning.

Hang around!
O.

Worried about mouth taping

Post by Hawthorne » Tue May 20, 2008 7:27 am

Ozij - As usual, really getting at the truth of the situation! You are so right, if mouth taping is so dangerous, what about this!
This is certainly worthy of it's own thread. The whole warning about mouth taping should defintiely be rethought when we read and see this, knowing this is one of the masks for sale out there! I will continue to tape!!

Training our selves not to breath through our nose? My mother used to tell me to close my mouth so I wouldn't catch flies Of course, it';s not like I can breath through my nose during allergy season anyway

Good point. And this mask too:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/FlexiF ... aykel.html

Under Chin fit gives a better, more stable fit. It is also good for holding up the jaw and sealing over some beards.

In my experience this mask keeps the jaw firmly closed.

I have the F&P Flexi-fit 421 which fits under my chin -- it does not keep the jaw closed -- I sleep with my mouth open very comfortably - I have tried all the "training" recommended for nose only breathing, and they don't work for me - I didn't like taping my mouth closed, somehow it just felt degrading to do that - now don't go and get in an uproad about that comment - it is just MY opinion

I don't want to discourage anyone from purchasing this mask - I really like the mask, it is comfortable

Take Care

Just a stupid tangent remark - I don't like taping, mainly because I'd decide to cough suddenly and blow it out, or want a drink and have to take it off, then it wouldn't reseal, and then there's the whole facial acne being exacerbated by the tape thing. Oy....

But I'll do it if I have to.

Right now, I'm not taping, and using just my chinstrap/headgear morph. Lately, it's been riding up on me, and covering my lips. Seems to work really well to keep my mouth shut.

Good luck to all, and thanks to Ozij for a great common sense thread!

YOU people are not experts you are going to KILL yourselves by taping. You are playing russian Roulette. You are only fooling yoursleves by listening to unemployed self procamliamed "experts" just becuase you google something doesn't mean you are an expert. All the doctors who are paid hundreds of thousands of doallars to research this info no nothing compared to the unemployed trailer trash who spend countless hours "reseacrhing" other peoples work and claiming it as their own

I personally don't like taping my mouth shut, just makes me feel weird. But, I'm not knocking it for those that it helps. You do what you have to.

As far the masks with chin thingies, they don't work for me either!! The Hybrid has one and I have to cut it off. It leaks less for me WITHOUT the chin thing. (I think it was maybe Rooster who suggested that waaay back two years ago?)

BTW, I'm officially at two years on cpap now! Yea! Being self-employed working from home in front of a computer all day long, before cpap I couldn't stay awake to do my work. (Typing can get boring normally anyway!!) CPAP might have actually saved my 12-year old business, as well as my health!

Sounds interesting. Will someone please repost O's original post? I never saw it and it looks like someone (maybe polysomnopunk?) deleted it.

If we're taking a vote, here, I too would like to see Ozij's original post. When my sleep doc saw my data last Monday, he was extremely impressed by the difference made by taping. With my receded chin and turkey waddle, the 3 chin straps that I've tried just don't work. The taping does the job (for me) and is comfortable. With Rooster's end flaps, it's easy to rip off when I cough or sneeze. I can cut a new strip and apply it in the dark.
