Cock a Doodle Doo!

Post by brackstone » Tue Apr 10, 2007 8:56 am

I should've listened all along, sometimes simplicity is key.

I couldn't get any sleep on Sunday night because I was so upset about my CPAP issues and all the pain it had been causing me. However I was determined that what had happened was more than likely because of mouth breathing.

But the only way to test this was to tape my mouth while using my swift. So I finally did it, albeit very gingerly. Since my fiance` works from home on Mondays I decided to tape and have her watch over me since I still had silly fears about suffocating. I slept for 3 hours straight, not waking up every hour like I did with the UMFF mask, and when I wasn't taped using the swift originally. I only woke up because I was hungry.

I repeated this last night as well, due to my insomnia I stayed up too late. But when I did sleep I taped my mouth shut and I used my swift and slept for what I believe to be undisturbed 3 hours again.

When I wake up I have no feelings of dryness or anything of that sort, I feel perfectly comfortable and rested! It's so nice to have some headway in this matter!

What's funny is all the signs were there but I didn't realize I should trust roosters taping guide. The irony here is I didn't trust taping, but, my fiance` loves roosters. She has rooster s&p shakers, sugar jars, spoon rests, etc. On a funnier note she went and checked out different halls to have our wedding at and she and one of her bridesmaids decided on a place called the "Chanticleer" which is french for rooster! Also when I was growing up my mom kept a giant rooster in the kitchen ( I think it was an italian thing ).

I can't wait till tonight hopefully I'll be able to fall asleep earlier and see how long I can go! If it goes most of the night I'll start working on getting a smart card reader so I can get data to post.

Very excited about tonight!

WTG, Brackstone! Loved the connection you drew to the roosters in your life. LOL!!

For new readers who might be wondering... "Huh? TAPE!!?" and "What the heck do roosters have to do with all this?" here's a link:

I've been happily taping my mouth at night for over three years. Lets me use masks I personally find much more comfortable to sleep in than full face masks.

There is irony in this. rooster suffered from anxiety and fatigue the entire time he was taping his mouth (about six months). He now believes one or both of the following was occurring:
- Cheek puffing was causing him to awake hundreds of times per night to swallow air, thereby leaving him sleep deprived.
- CO2 washout with the Swift nasal pillows was not sufficient.

Then in August 2006, rooster dropped the mouth taping and switched to the Hybrid FF mask. Life has been improving for him since. In fact, he just came in from a 4-mile hill climb and then hit the weight bench for a few minutes.

Many people tape and have good success with it. rooster still advocates the procedure for them.

Good for you Brackstone,

Wow that is ironic, guess we are birds of a different feather

I still plan on trying the UMFF again in the future at some point, however, I won't push it. If I wake up with pain my throat instead of forcing myself to continue to use it I'll just switch to my pillow.

I'm waiting for warmer weather as well as I don't want anymore cold snaps to possibly be the cause. I believe Snoredog suggested that, and it makes sense, couple with the fact that my Forced Air system was set to 0 humidity.
