I figured out a way to keep my mouth shut!

Post by chipbug » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:59 pm

I've been using cpap for 11 years. I've tried everything to keep my mouth from leaking. My pressure is 18 so it blows out my mouth when I go into a deep sleep. I finally found something that works for me (not tape, yeah tape works but its a pain to use night after night). I put one of those pillows filled with bean hulls under my chin! I wedge my chin and head tight between the pillow on the back of my head (I have to sleep on my back) and the bean pillow under my chin, braced against my chest. I also use the respironics deluxe chinstrap. I further make a conscious effort before falling asleep to seal my lips and create a small suction inside my mouth and push my tounge forward against my teeth and up to the roof of my mouth. The suction holds my tounge there. The end result is no mouth leaks.

Your bean-pillow-under-the-chin is a good idea, Chip.

Probably works much like Kiralynx's "brandy keg" chin-propper-upper:

Yeah! Isn't it wonderful when we find something that works? When you say you have to sleep on your back I'm thinking it's for medical reasons versus preference right? Because sleeping on your back may be what's driving your pressure so high. You probably know all this - just thought I'd mention it : )

Before I had the papcap, I used to wrap a hand towel into what I called a 'chin chock' for the very same purpose. Whatever works.
