taping & chin strap, but still puffing

Post by jnmv1969 » Mon Jul 19, 2010 7:37 am

Hello all -

I am both taping and using a chin strap but I am still getting puffing - enough so, that it keeps waking me up and I cannot fall asleep with the cpap (the furthest I can get with wearing it is about 45 minutes before I give up because I keep getting woken up by the puffing.) I would post my data, but it is very limited. Sometimes I get events in those 45 minutes, and sometimes none at all.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

Same here. I added a terry cloth head band around my mouth and that pretty much solved it. Good luck.

I eventually went the FFM route partly because of this problem. Had to be careful as some FFMs actually made the puffing worse for me (like the Liberty). I now happily use the comfortgel full.

You might try DreamStalker's approach which is similar to what JeffH suggests I think: viewtopic/t53826/viewtopic.php?p=498292#p498292

Good luck!

I switched to a FFM mask too for that reason.

That's correct. Only difference is I use a head band instead of an Ace bandage. Either should work just fine.

I am in my first week of using the machine and have experimented with the blue painters tape. Currently have the Swift II nasal pillow system & love the light weight feeling & that not much of your face is covered. However, I noticed right off that my mouth is going to open regardless of what I do, so I started taping....first it would get really wet & come off, then I learned to not lean over to the side so drastically and that is not happening, but I'm still getting the puffing during the night which wakes me up & I'm somehow swallowing air which results in the horrible uncomfortable bloating the next day. Really didn't know what to try next...I usually sleep on my side but will roll over to back during the night. My pressure setting is 8 (but starts at a 4 & ramps up). I've read where sometimes if pressure is too much, it results in the aerophagia, but I didn't think an 8 would be much of a problem. Out of 6 nights, I've had only 2 nights where I got more than 3 or maybe 4 hours of sleep....some not that much.

Woohoo!! Finally got almost 6 hours of sleep! My mouth was starting to have some irritation from the tape, so when my DE called to check on me yesterday, told him about the mouth leaks & how I couldn't sleep....he delivered a chin strap to me & while I was a little reluctant to wear one, tried it last night and NO TAPE.....went to sleep on my side and never really moved. I did wake up a couple of times & adjusted the pillows just barely, then went right back to sleep until 5:00. I also had been using the humidifier without heat, just filled with the distilled water....but tried it on 1, and it really seems to help. I don't feel the air rushing down as much as I did before. It is more soothing. Ok, it's great to finally have a good night! Maybe I got this thing!! LOL Will be nice to see if I don't nod off this afternoon like usual.

Congratulations....keep us posted.

Different methods work differently for each of us. Some go the FFM, others tape, others chinstrap, and even some a combination of the above - you might have to try them all before finding what works best for you! Also, since you just started therapy, it might take a few weeks or longer for you to feel a real significant improvement; again different for each of us. Be patient, it's a marathon.
