If you want to lose weight your total caloric intake will need to be less than what you burn. 3500 calories = 1 pound. A deficit of 500/day x 7 days will give you 1 pound of weight loss per week. Carbs will increase your blood sugar. So will protein if you eat more than your body needs through glucogenesis. Fats do not affect blood sugar but add 9 calories per gram as opposed to 4 per gram for carbs and protein.
Let's say you are a 200 lb, 6 ft, 55 y/o male who exercises twice a week for about 30 minutes. To maintain your current weight you need 2244 calories per day. To lose 1 pound a week you should eat 1744 calories a day. If you eat 7% carb, 15% protein, and 83% fat you will have a good ketogenic diet. In grams, that amounts to 31g carb, 65g protein, and 161g fat. Keeping your carbs low will mean cutting out all grains, starches, fruits, rice, sugar, oatmeal, cereal, corn, beans, milk, pasta, and potatoes. You can still eat salad greens, zucchini, cauliflower, and some other vegetables. Eat meat, poultry and fish to meet your protein needs and include fats such as olive oil, butter, etc to fill up. Usually you will not feel hungry with this diet after a week or two.

Re: Started ketogenic diet without initial fast - updates...
The ketogenic diet is a tough regime to follow.
I'm trying to get my mom to start the diet. She has severe sleep apnea and follows Tim Ferriss's slow-carb protocol which is a start.
I actually wrote an article about the ketogenic diet: http://www.lifehackersguide.com/ketogenic-diet
What do you guys think?
Should I add a section about anecdotal reports of it helping with sleep apnea?

Was it better than this thread?harrisonalley wrote:. . . I actually wrote an article about the ketogenic diet
Well, I would think that might depend on whether you actually have read or heard any anecdotal reports of it helping with sleep apnea. Personally, I have not.harrisonalley wrote: . . . Should I add a section about anecdotal reports of it helping with sleep apnea?

Re: Started ketogenic diet without initial fast - updates...
I just watched the video and I do agree with it. If you look at my whole post and not just an isolated sentence you can see that I said to eat low carb, moderate protein, and fats. This is exactly what Dr. Fung said. Now once you have proper blood sugar control (which will normalize insulin levels), you still need to think about your total calorie consumption. You cannot expect to eat unlimited bacon, or any other fats, and lose weight.jnk... wrote:Fung debunks that tired, disproven, insulting, and mischaracterizing oversimplification: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F5o0a4p_3Umummmz wrote:If you want to lose weight your total caloric intake will need to be less than what you burn. . . .

As a type 2 diabetic I have been able to normalize my blood sugars - I never go above 100 now.
