We have personalized the email notifications with screen names (example of body of email: Hello SleepPunk, you have received a...) to make interaction with the site more warm and friendly.

I prefer warm and friendly interactions to come from warm and friendly human beings - there is enough warmth and friendliness in the human interactions on this forum to have kept me here for more than 3 years.

I do not need - nor want - pseudo "personalized" notifications from what I had supposed was an impersonal robot that did not use my screen name in connection with my email. I find that kind of fake friendliness disconcerting. I was obviously wrong in what I understood when reading the registration screen info 3 years ago.

More things are connected together and sent around in emails or other forms, greater the chance for somebody to get that type of information.

Furthermore, by connecting screen names to users email addresses, cpap.com has created at least one more connection in their system between usernames and screen names - and we have no idea how many users use the cpap@cpaptalk user account, know its password, deal with its address list, etc.

As for adding the PM text: I now realize that one of these days, when the database gets messed up, the text of my PM might arrive in somebody else's email. I will certainly keep that in mind. A person's ability to read my PM is no longer dependent on their ability to log in to cpaptalk, only on their ability (or somebody else's) to log in to their email.

Personally, nobody but me has access to my email - but - passwords can be cracked, email databases moved from one place to another. Many people - especially those older than 40 have younger relatives helping them with their email - and other computer related chores. Why should anyone's grandchild, say: "Huh? Where'd you get that nickname from?"

I think that the concerns that Ozij expresses are very valid.
I don't have an issue with the robot warmth, but I don't think it's a good idea to put PM email text into a notification for the reason she expresses...
Though I don't have a direct issue with the nickname being used, it can cause issues in the future that nobody can predict today -- keeping things separate enhances everyone's security -- and that's not a bad thing!!!
I do agree that the warm an fuzzy feeling comes from the forum not the robots.....

I also have to agree with Ozij. I like the old system of PM notification. It's supposed to just that, notify you that you have a PM, not tell you what the PM is about.

I think many here post here because they are anonymous. I get PMs from people who sign their names and some that use ONLY their screen name. I think that those that want to be known by a screen name only should be able to do so. For some it is more than a security issue.

I, too, am with Ozij on this one. I see no need for any change in the previous PM system. It worked just fine. The new system does create possible security issues that are inherent in all email. Why do something that may cause those issues? The previous system worked well. I don't want my Username showing up in the notification email telling me that I have a PM on this forum. I see no need for the message to appear in my email either. I saw it, for the first time, today when I got a PM. It just didn't sit right with me.
I believe the Username and the PM should appear only on this forum for reasons articulated by Ozij. I'm in favour of keeping it that way! I guess I should say, "Going back to that way"! The PMs are private, and as such, belong here, not in an email. My Username is for accessing and communicating on this forum and belongs here.

Yeah, I'm with Ozij, too. I want to be in charge of how much anonymity I have and when, and I do have passwords on everything! And, even though I am, a-hem, definitely over 40, and manage quite nicely taking care of all my computer stuff , regarding this issue, I still like things the "way they were" before the new forum setup.

For the sake of convencience - I do like having the PM contents in the email.

For the sake of security - I highly agree with Ozij and the others. No reason to put the username in the email, or the message contents.

I have had cases (at work) where emails intended for one person ended up going out to the entire company (and not because the sender put in the wrong destination). So you never know!

And there is lots of private conversations going on this forum...

I respect people's privacy so I'll vote in favor of Ozij's suggestions - for both the PM contents and the username in the topic notifications - (at the sake of losing some convenience).

p.s. Also I think people on the board should be sensitive and not reveal other people's personal details even if they know it from a PM or whatever. We should all respect that.

1. Please add MarkAsRead to the available items such as Mark/Delete in the drop down list.

2. Duplicate the bottom line where the above drop down list is, at the top too. Usually that is where we see the new msgs, so we do not have to scroll down to the bottom.

[Implementation suggestion: just make a php function for the entire bottom line, and call it from the top and bottom ]

Topic Title (subject) and Poster's name.
I'm having quite a bit of trouble when I click on the subject or title of the post, my mouse seems to hit the poster's name and I get their profile instead of the post, a lot of the time. The 2 are too close together. Is it just me?

- A star on any thread means you have posted in it
- A member's avatar just means the original poster has an avatar and we wanted to display that instead of the symbols below to add some personality to the main page.

For example:

- Unread topic (Someone has posted to this topic since your last visit.)

An after thought: The above certainly will be helpful. You also have the 'bubble help' (the few words that pop up when you position the cursor at any icon). Why not put the full text of the each help for every icon bubble help. This way the help will be needed when/where it is! For example, in the topics page, the first little icon has a help says, 'Go to the first unread post', but the topic description has not so obvious help 'New Posts'. What exactly is the function of the latter? "Go to the first new post since last visit'? 'Go to the last post'? Please make it what ever it is supposed to do I am not clear even now what this is supposed to be.

Also, I have a feeling the same icon may be used in more than one context for different operations, in different pages; for example in the topics page vs in the thread page. That should be avoided, IMO. Use all distinct icons.
