Try clicking unsubscribe at the bottom of the page.
For a more in depth look at your subscriptions go to your profile: ucp.php?i=main&mode=subscribed

Chris, clicking on unsubscribe does not do it on this particular thread for me, but it works for me for other normal threads. But going thru the link you provided, seemed to have achieved what I want. Thank you!

The quoted text in the new version is much cleaner!

Post by feeling_better » Tue Aug 19, 2008 11:44 am

Chris, Thank you for removing things like equipment list and all other added on links from the quoted text. The quotes are much more readable on this new version. Good move!

Screen Name used in topic notification emails

Post by ozij » Tue Aug 19, 2008 12:00 pm

My screen name now appears on all topinc notification emails and I do not like that.

My topic reply notifications used to come to the email address I gave when registrering, from "forumadmin@cpaptalk.com", and the addressee was hidden.

Now they are sent to ozij, from cpap@cpaptalk.com, where ozij has clearly been used a nickname for the email address you have.

Using the screen name as a nickname for the registration email is one sure way to hurt any poster's anonymity, since the screen name and the email now appear in the poster's computer on all incoming posts from cpaptalk.

Ha ha. Hi Babette, that was due to a time crunch in trying to get the new site launched. I have it on our graphics artists' list of things to do and we will have those for you shortly. Also, in reply to your post about the FAQ for CPAP...I mentioned it before but, we have some other things up our sleeves coming to CPAPtalk in the next 60 days or so. These new things will be much better tools for helping newbies. Please be patient, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Well, I like the idea that the text of the msg appears in my email. I do appreciate ozij's concerns. Perhaps we can have best of both worlds. Add another preference setting, to request if one wants the text to be included in the msg or not.

On the previous subject from ozij, it is a good idea not to use the forum user id in the emails because that does increase the risk of privacy compromise. More things are connected together and sent around in emails or other forms, greater the chance for somebody to get that type of information.

We have personalized the email notifications with screen names (example of body of email: Hello SleepPunk, you have received a...) to make interaction with the site more warm and friendly. There is nothing unusual about this and it is quite common. As far as the PM message being contained in the email notification, we felt that this was a very favorable option so that members can see the PM without logging into CPAPtalk and then determine if they want to take the time to get to the CPAPtalk website and login right away and respond to the PM...or if it is something that could wait until later.

Personally, nobody but me has access to my email. I would suggest password protecting your email account if you have concerns about people reading your private and personal email messages, whether it be from CPAPtalk or any place else. Your email is your email and it is up to you to make sure no one else but you has access to it and that your email is secure.

If for some reason I misunderstood your concern, by all means please elaborate.

I prefer warm and friendly interactions to come from warm and friendly human beings - there is enough warmth and friendliness in the human interactions on this forum to have kept me here for more than 3 years.

I do not need - nor want - pseudo "personalized" notifications from what I had supposed was an impersonal robot that did not use my screen name in connection with my email. I find that kind of fake friendliness disconcerting. I was obviously wrong in what I understood when reading the registration screen info 3 years ago.
feeling_better wrote:More things are connected together and sent around in emails or other forms, greater the chance for somebody to get that type of information.
Exactly.
Furthermore, by connecting screen names to users email addresses, cpap.com has created at least one more connection in their system between usernames and screen names - and we have no idea how many users use the cpap@cpaptalk user account, know its password, deal with its address list, etc.

As for adding the PM text: I now realize that one of these days, when the database gets messed up, the text of my PM might arrive in somebody else's email. I will certainly keep that in mind. A person's ability to read my PM is no longer dependent on their ability to log in to cpaptalk, only on their ability (or somebody else's) to log in to their email.

Personally, nobody but me has access to my email - but - passwords can be cracked, email databases moved from one place to another. Many people - especially those older than 40 have younger relatives helping them with their email - and other computer related chores. Why should anyone's grandchild, say: "Huh? Where'd you get that nickname from?"
