Transferring SleepyHead to Another Computer

Post by rosacer » Wed Aug 05, 2015 9:21 am

Hi,

I tried to install Sleepyhead on Win 10 laptop, my patience is gone

I don't know what I'm doing the wrong way but it is not working. I don't get an .exe file once I extract only .dll and two named Sleepyhead- BrokenGL and Sleepyhead- OpenGL

I tried to open them, once it gave me the Sleepyhead window and asked for the user information, area, time etc and then it told it didn't find the data even if I had copied all the data from my old laptop to Documents and changed the name to SleepyHeadData- Testing.

Also, I don't see anywhere the SleepyHead icon as it could be if it has been installed, once it appeared on the start menu but it is no more there.

I HATE computers Could somebody gladly help us the computer haters to install Sleepyhead on Windows 10 ?

Thanks very much

Rosie
p.s. I will continue using my Win 7 laptop until this mystery is solved

The Broken GL and Open GL files are the application exe files even if you can't see the exe part of the file name.

Try this...go to the Open GL file and click on it and see if SH opens...if it does go back to it and right click your mouse and choose "pin to start menu" or "pin to taskbar" or something/somewhere you can find it easily and the SH sheep icon will be put there and then you don't have to go find the exe file in the folder each time.

Hi Rosie,
If you want to see the file extensions, like .exe, open the file explorer, click "view" and put a check in the "file name extensions" box.

You shouldn't have had to change the name of the old folder. You could have copied the whole folder by going to documents in your old computer, right clicking on SleepyHeadData-Testing and copied it without opening. Then just paste it into the new computer documents folder, first changing the name of the new folder that was put there. If you did change the name of the folder with the old data, make sure it is exactly the same as the new folder and make sure you don't have two folders with the same name in your documents folder

An alternative method would be to delete the contents of the new folder that is created when you installed sleepyhead and copy and past the contents of the old folder into it.

Edit: A tested method of transferring SleepyHead from one computer to another.

This test was done using SleepyHead 9.8 From a Win 10 Machine to a Vista machine.
1. Copy the SleepyHeaddata testing File from Documents on the first Computer to Documents on the second computer.
2.Copy the Sleepyhead Program files from the first computer to any location on the second computer.
3.Run the SleepyHead Program by clicking on the executable in the program folder
  • a. the first run may require Running as System Administrator
    b. the first run may not find the data file and ask to create one, Say yes.
4. Run SleepyHead again - all users and data from the first computer should be on the second.

Hi Pugsy and Jay,

Thanks very much for the willingness to help me with my PROBLEM.

Here what I have done.
I tried it and it didn't work, then I decided to run it as administrator and it worked. I pinned SH to the task bar. Thanks, now I can see the sheep and been opening it non stop. You will understand in a couple of lines lower GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
If you want to see the file extensions, like .exe, open the file explorer, click "view" and put a check in the "file name extensions" box.
I did it and I can see the extensions, it's better that way

You shouldn't have had to change the name of the old folder. You could have copied the whole folder by going to documents in your old computer, right clicking on SleepyHeadData-Testing and copied it without opening. Then just paste it into the new computer documents folder, first changing the name of the new folder that was put there. If you did change the name of the folder with the old data, make sure it is exactly the same as the new folder and make sure you don't have two folders with the same name in your documents folder
I copied the SleepyHeadData-Testing folder from my old computer, I put it on the new computer Documents folder; I finish by erasing the one SH created and I let only the one from the old computer with the exact name the one I erased. There is only one with that name.

I clic on the sheep, I get a screen with the 4 profiles I used to see on the old computer's SH. But now there 1 in red with the mention (OPEN) besides, why ?????
Let's say I choose RosieC (OPEN) then Select User . I get a screen with this message:

Warning
There is a lockfile already present for profile RosieC.
You can only work with one instance of an individual SH profile at a time.

Please close any other instance of SH running with this before proceeding.

If no other instance of SH are running it is safe to ignore this message.

(If I had chosen cancel this window closes and it stays only the first window where I see all the 4 profiles I have and I need to chose one again).

If I choose OK, it opens another screen and tells SH needs to upgrade its data base for Respironics System One bla bla bla (an older data I have). I say Yes, then another window telling SH will now start the import wizard so I can reinstall my Phillips Respironics data, say YES then another window asking for the data and a card with the data. Because I have no data card it opens a screen Find Directory , I then say Close and a message telling SleepyHead-OpenGL.exe has stopped working, Close program.

I don't know how I managed to get the data from Rosie S9 which is the present machine I'm using. That data is there but the other data from the user number 1 , 3 and 4 are not accepted and it closes time after time.

I don't know what is happening or what to do with this. If you have an idea I will appreciate. If not, may I ask you Pugsy to take note of the steps you perform when you will install your new computer with SH please. This is so disappointing I will continue using my old laptop for SH and I hope the solution will arrive.

Thanks very much again

Rosie

That simply means there is a lock file which thinks another version of SH has the files open. IF you only have one version of SH running, you can ignore the message and open them anyway and the lock files will be cleared.

I see... not sure I have any suggestions. I think there is a way to reconstruct the data but I have not used it.

Rosie, I think you may have created two RosieC profiles. The Old one and a new one when you installed SleepyHead on your new computer or you inadvertently created another lock file that isn't being erased when you close a user.

Let's try this:

On the new computer click the on the sheep, then click on each user that comes up in the dialogue box and note at the bottom of the box that they are all in the same location. If not, make a note of all locations. The paths should be something like: Folder: C:/users/Rosie/Documents/SleepyHeadData-testing. (Most likely, they're all in the same place)
Edit for clarification: In this step we're just checking the location of the profiles. Left click on each user and note the location of each folder at the bottom. There is no need to "Select User" at the right and it doesn't matter if one or more are red. When done, just Close (X) the box.

Close sleepyhead on the new computer, restart the computer just to be sure. With SleepyHead closed, go to each (if more than one) folder found above and delete it.

Now go to the old computer, start sleepy head, make sure there are no red users, close sleepyhead.
(if there is a red user indicating a user is already signed on, try closing and reopening Sleepyhead and restarting the computer. If it remains, Stop and we'll try to fix it before continuing)

Go to documents on the old computer with SleepyHead closed and copy the SleepyHeadData-Testing folder (make a new copy)

Now go to the new computer (do not start SleepyHead) and paste this copy into your documents folder.

Now start SleepyHead on the New Computer. What happens ?

Edit: A tested method of transferring SleepyHead from one computer to another.
This test was done using SleepyHead 9.8 From a Win 10 Machine to a Vista machine.
1. Copy the SleepyHeaddata testing File from Documents on the first Computer to Documents on the second computer.

3. Run the SleepyHead Program by clicking on the executable in the program folder
  • a. the first run may require Running as System Administrator
    b. the first run may not find the data file and ask to create one, Say yes.
4. Run SleepyHead again - all users and data from the first computer should be on the second.

Rosie it's going to be a little while before I can get Win 10 to put on the new laptop. I haven't got the notice yet on it. I got it on the old laptop but I don't want to upgrade it to Win 10.

But I think that Jay's last instructions should cover your problem.

My plan is to just replace the current SH folder (that has all the sub folders in it) with the old same folder from my old laptop. I won't bother with renaming or anything like that. I will first delete the old folder and then transfer the new folder via SD card copy to the new laptop and put it in MyDocuments where the old one was.

Thanks guys you all are lovely

I will follow Jay's instructions this evening and try to fix the problem. Yesterday I swear a couple of times it shouldn't be complicated but this is Murphy's law following me

Pugsy, I understand you not wanting to install Win 10 in your old computer. I received today the notice Win 10 is ready to be installed on my old one but NO WAY, I will not install that instead of my Win 7. Win 7 has been working so for now and until Win 10 proves it is not a piece of shit I will not install it. I installed it on my new because Win 8 was a DOUBLE SHIT driving me crazy and I was not interested on wasting my time learning how that work, sigh.

Pugsy pay attention on the million permissions set on YES you will get when installing Win 10, Microsoft wants to steal all your privacy if you allow them. I set OFF all that crap, also there is a cloud thing gladly offering you to put all your information in the clouds for free, NO WAY again. I don't trust that clouds stuff, who assures me somebody wont go and take my information or make some damage? I don't need that I have enough room on earth

Rosie

That's pretty much why I am also putting Windows 10 on my new laptop. I hate Win 8.1 and too old to put forth the effort to learn.
If worst comes to worst...I will put Win 7 on it.

I have to wait to download anything at the moment though...went over download allowance and I am being penalized with ultra slow internet speed. Doesn't hurt me until I need something for images or websites that are image intensive or download any sort of file. To try to do the big Win 10 right now...probably would take a month.

Hi Jay,

Bad news, it is not working GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I erased sleepyhead and all data from the new computer.
I copied the data from the old computer following your instructions,
I pasted it in the documents.

I went to sleepyhead site to download again the 64 bits version and installed it, not working. having the same problems. I needed to download C++ because it was a file missing. Erased the 64 bits.

I downloaded 32 bits version, same thing.

I let SH to create the data file and then I went to switch it with the old data, not working, Each time I tried to select an user it mark it as OPEn on red. I discovered it creates a file named lockfile, if I delete it the OPEN mention disappears.

I'm really feed up, I toke my SD card and I transferred the data it has into the new computer, it worked but I have no access to all the other data I have in the old computer nor all the graphics as we know it happens after one week back. I don't know if this matter has another solution other than starting from now and forgetting the old data in the old computer, it is a boring situation.

Thanks Jay

Rosie

One more SHIT. When I put the SD card back into the machine it says 'Invalid SD card' This is the first time something happens to one of my cards, damn shit !

Now I really lost all the data form the card and the only data available is the one in the old computer I'm unable to transfer, very nice. I find that weird that I was able to read the card on the new computer and now it doesn't work in the machine, the secure lock was on when I read the data, what a shit Murphy.

I will need to buy another card, I don't find the one spare I had, I moved and I have no clue where it could be. Is that card somthing special or whatever 3 G card will work? I don't know if I can buy such a small capacity.

Thanks

You did download the binary version the one you don't need to unzip, just run it and it self-extracts? I didn't need to get anything extra to run it on Win10 though I tested it at work as I don't plan on using it here at the house any time soon.

As for the SDCard, I must have 20+ SDCards around for various purposes (most are MicroSD cards with holders for full SDCard usage). Use them for Cameras, phones, computers, Raspberry Pi, transfer purposes etc.. There is nothing special about them.

Edit IV: A tested method of transferring SleepyHead from one computer to another.
This test was done using SleepyHead 9.8 From a Win 10 Machine to a Vista machine.
1. Copy the SleepyHeaddata testing File from Documents on the first Computer to Documents on the second computer.
2. Copy the Sleepyhead Program files from the first computer to any location on the second computer.
3. Run the SleepyHead Program by clicking on the executable in the program folder
  • a. the first run may require Running as System Administrator
    b. the first run may not find the data file and ask to create one, Say yes.
4. Run SleepyHead again - all users and data from the first computer should be on the second.

Rosie,
rosacer wrote:I erased sleepyhead and all data from the new computer.

Do you mean the SleepyHeadData-testing file and no more files, or the SleepyHeadData-testing and more files as well?
rosacer wrote:I erased sleepyhead and all data from the new computer. I copied the data from the old computer following your instructions, I pasted it in the documents. I went to sleepyhead site to download again ...
WHY, did you download again?

I'm not sure what's going on here. But you shouldn't have needed to download SleepyHead again.

The general steps are:
1. Download and install Sleepyhead to the new computer.
  • You don't have to create a profile, but if you do, make it simple, with a name like "NewTest", just enter the name and no more.
2. On the new computer with SleepyHead closed, delete only the SleepyHeadData-testing file that was just created in your Documents folder.
  • Don't delete any other SleepyHead files.
3. Copy and Paste the old SleepyHeadData-testing file from the old computer Documents folder to the new computer Documents Folder.
  • That's it. You don't need to download SleepyHead again.
4. If it doesn't work here, stop. Don't download again. We have to figure out why it doesn't work.

I think you're creating two profiles which is what's causing the extra Lock file. Don't create a Rosie profile when you download Sleepyhead to the new computer and don't download SleepyHead to the new computer if you've already copied a SleepyHeadData-Testing file to it.

As an alternative method:
Download SH to the new computer Don't create any profiles.
Copy the individual profile folders from inside the old Profile Folder in SleepyHeadData-Testing on the old computer to inside the new Profile Folder inside the new SleepyHeadData-testing Folder on the new computer.

And, it's possible I suppose, that there is problem that has been overlooked in the above procedures

Yes, as Kevin says any SD card should work. It's getting hard to find small ones (2gig) any more. 4, 8, or larger should be fine.

Edit: Please note that this method can not be used for upgrade. If the old computer is running SH 9.6 you can't copy and paste into 9.8, for example. Also note, that this method has not been rigorously tested. I have tested it with an W7 archived file to the same computer with W10 and it appears to work and it seems that it should, but that is no guarantee that it will. Jay

Edit II: Rosie, What version of Sleepyhead do you have on your old computer? If it's not 9.8-1, You probably need to upgrade the old computer to that before trying to do the transfer. Should have asked that sooner

Edit III: These steps are likely to change!
