Wasn't properly extracted or didn't self extract?

I gotta quit for the night. I expect you guys will have this running by the time I get up in the morning

so, no error messages come up... strange.

I'd stick with the 'broken' for the time being, it's really not "broken", a better name would be "compatible with older drivers" but jedimark was feeling snarky when he named it. it should work on anything, but might not be quite as fast as the 'open' version, on a system that supports the open version.

I'm starting to think that it's going to need someone actually looking at the screen, and seeing if they can spot something that's harder to find that's wrong.

Rosie, is that "sheep" a short cut left over from 9.2? if so, it may not be pointing to the correct file.
Try going into the extracted program file and clicking on the SleepyHead executable (exe) directly. Or is that the "sheep" you're talking about?

I was clicking on the executable inside the extracted files. What happens is that 9.6 version is for XP, I confirmed it I checked (the computer has an option for that) for compatibility and it confirms it is for XP.

I don't have the 9.6 for Win 7.

Rosie, that was the exact same 9.6 file I was running with win 7, I checked the description of the download.
You might right click on the executable then select "Security" on the dialogue box and check that the user you are has full permissions to run the program.
No kiddin' I have to quite for the night.

Jay, I run it as administrator , i have all the persmissions.

I check the attributes for the folder and it shows Read only, I try to modified the attribute I make Apply, the case looks empty but once I come back to see if the read only is no more there I see it is again Read Only. I don't know where to go to really modiffy it. Why I can't change the attribute?

OK: I have all the permissions, I double check.

SH 9.2 is in Programs Files (x86) folder. SH 9.6 is downloaded in Downloads. Could it be a problem?

I don't know how it is that some times I had clic on the executable I get the window where you choose the language, I choose English, the window closes and that's all I have and the far I have been. I have downloaded, extracted and deleted those files a lot of times. I opened Revo to see if it was something I needed to delete on deep left behind but I found only one of the outnumbered C++ versions, I deleted it but nothing changed.

Don't worry I will let the things as it is, it has taken too much time to everybody. I thank you all deeply for your efforts and lets do something more profitable from our time Some time we win others not

Rosie

Good Morning Rosie,

Darn, I thought you'd have this running by now.

Yes, installing the program to a new location could very well be the problem, and could be the problem 9.8 didn't install.
Normally with an upgrade, you would extract the new version to the same location as the old, i.e. (x86)

I think I would upgrade to 9.6 by:
1. Make backup Copies of the SleepyHeadData Folder in Documents and the SleepyHead Program Folder in (x86) to a thumb drive or SD card.

Then:
1. Leave the SleepyHeadData folder in documents.
2. Leave the SleepyHead Program Folder in place (x86).
3. Extract the new version to Program files (x86).

If that didn't work, I would:
1. leave the SleepyHeadData Folder in documents.
2. DELETE the program file in (x86)
3. Extract the new version to Program files (x86).

If that didn't work, I would:
1. DELETE the SleepyHeadData Folder in documents
2. DELETE the program file in (x86)
3. Extract the new version to Program files (x86) or where ever you wanted.
4. Replace the SleepyHeadData Folder in document with the back up to restore your data.

double check the permission after each trial. I know I had some problem with them, but I don't remember what it was. My instructions before left out a step, it should be: right click on the executable, then select properties, then select Security, and then check the user permissions in the box and edit if necessary.

If none of these work, Restore SleepyHead 9.2 from the backed up folders.

Hey hey

I haven no good news, I did this part

Nothing changed in the results, same thing as in the past tries.

I restored all as it was so I still have SD 9.2 working well in the old computer and all my old data intact.

For now I will wait a bit before trying the last step, I wonder if the risk and work worth it. Among others I have no time now, this has taken a lot of hours yet and I have done nothing to set the new computer, make the back-ups, transfers of data and software needed. I will put SH on the ice for a while and concentrate on making the new computer

No matter what will be the end of the saga I thank you all very much for your great help and dedication to try to find the solution to my strange problem .

Rosie

The moment I try something I let you know good or bad,

Hi Rosie,

I understand your frustration and your desire to "put it on ice". I have done a little more research and found that this isn't really a new problem for you. In this post from 2014, you couldn't upgrade to a new version because you were missing "Qt5core.dll" - But, all the required .dll's should be in the "extracted" SleepyHead program file.

So when you want to explore this problem a little bit more, here are two things I can think of that might cause this kind of problem.
  • 1. The program has not been properly extracted from the Zip file. In windows, a zip file can be opened without extracting and the result "looks" like it has been extracted. To extract a file, right click on the .zip file and left click on "extract all" .
    2. The executable has been moved from the Folder containing the program files. This could happen if someone drug or copied the executable to the desktop, for example, thinking they were making a short cut. To be sure, run the program by clicking on the executable "in" the program folder.
I don't know if either of these has been your problem, but it's worth a review when you feel like fooling with it.

BTW, are you still using that "Down Load Manager" you referenced in your old post? I really don't know what that is, but I suppose it could be giving you problems. If is a Microsoft program, you should be able to go to control panel/Programs and Uninstall it. If it is a 3rd party app and it doesn't show up in Programs, you might be to disable it by using a malware finder like Malywarebytes (antivirus programs usually won't find these types of programs). If it was a plug in to Internet Explorer, you should be able to find it under "tools" (cog)/mange Add Ons.

Jay

Hi Jay,

Today I started to work on the new laptop, more hours of pleasure awaiting me

Once I received that message about Qt5core.dll missing, what is funny is I saw the file in the folder because I was going to take it from the other SH to copy it in the new but it was there .

Code: Select all

1. The program has not been properly extracted from the Zip file. In windows, a zip file can be opened without extracting and the result "looks" like it has been extracted. To extract a file, right click on the .zip file and left click on "extract all" .

I saw this situation, i received a message when i tried to execute the .exe being not extracted. Knowing that possible situation I used ''extract all''.

The other thing I encounter was a message about the rights so I Run it always inside its folder as administrator (not from a short cut) because it seemed to do really nothing if I tried to run it double clicking only. Yesterday I changed all the rights I could have access for C:/ and I check the rights for the files I was working with. It was making a fuss not letting me write on 'Programs x86, etc, so I gave full control to each one in the list (I'm the only user but I had alter-egos , I love Windows )

For sure it could have been an issue but I don't think it's the problem in this case. I see you can't let a dumb machine beat you even if I don't like working with computers me neither I don't like a machine defeating me When I finish installing the new laptop I will work again with SH.

Thank you

Rosie
