I guess I'm back; the forum I started less than an hour ago, artistmonkknitters.com, is now defunkkt. A big fight broke out and everybody left when a link to a sacrilegious, but arguably artistic, photo was posted and the moderators refused to remove it.

I'd question whether the 2x4 approach works in the absence of any prior relationship with the person and in the absence of any validation/empathy. I can see how once you have a relationship with someone, or once you've listened and conveyed that you understand what they are going through, problem solving and possibly (more remote possibility) a kick in the pants might be accepted. I think what happens here is that some of the members chime in with empathy, some with problem solving, and some with a kick in the pants, and depending on a variety of factors (the OP's state, personality, the order in which they receive this, etc.), it either is taken in stride or not.

When I first came here, I was alarmed by some treatment of newbies. I've now come to identify the response more with the responder. Some members always deliver the 2x4, some can always be counted to be empathic (and some of us are a loose canon and you don't know what you're going to get... ). It's a chaotic mess... Just like a real family.

Why isn't your motivational poetry one of the options on that poll, Carbonman?

He said goodbye. Why would anyone expect him to reply?
Over the years, I have been on a variety of forums and email mailing lists. In most cases of posted goodbyes with a statement of being mistreated (or similar), then the person does stay around, respond to that topic, and continue to argue about why they are unhappy there.

Typically, the only people who announce a goodbye and actually leave are leaving due to time issues, other things going on, etc.

In the few cases where I left a group, permanently, or for awhile due to needing a break, I just quit posting. No announcement. Those goodbye posts are usually just for attention, and not really a true goodbye, so I decided I would not do those.

I am surprised that this OP has not replied as it did seem like an attention wanting goodbye, but maybe it was a real one.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Personally I don't believe a 2x4 approach is appropriate since we would rarely know the full story behind a new posters frustrations. I can say that I find this forum invaluable and thatwhen I have a specific question, I prefer to PM key posters that I view to be good helpful souls... To those, a big hat tip for being an asset to the forum and most helpful to someone in need. True gems!

Actually..... The Shambala centre and temple in Halifax NS did have a handwork meditation session where people did knitting, crocheting or needle work as a "moving meditation" practice.

However always remember that knitters have two or more long pointy sticks OR what my father calls a garrote (circular needle)

i have to agree. I don't post very often anymore because I am too sensitive but I still enjoy the forum. If you don't post your feeling won't get hurt. The forum is still the best place to learn about cpap therapy.
