TROLL ALERT! - IF YOU ARE BORED HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO TROLL
LOL - okay this post and the title of the thread have been edited. I didn't know the site was unmoderated and trolls were allowed to roam freely, too bad really, mature discussions on topics that people don't agree on will never happen here, which is how this thread started but obviously didn't end up. I'd delete it, but that feature is missing too.
Now it is named properly, and maybe the trolls can troll each other and have a nice time doing it, I have better things to do
Below is the original post
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Forum CATEGORIES NEEDED! (original title of thread)
viewtopic/t54375/FORUM-CATEGORIES--Just ... e-out.html
This has been discussed before as above. The problem with the current format is many good topics are simply LOST in the MASSIVE sea of data in the current format. This is a very DATED format, I can't think of not even one other webite that has only ONE Category, not one and there is a very good reason for that, because its just plain terrible.
Don't get me wrong, I am very glad I found this place BUT better ORGANIZATION means like topics are grouped together and easier for people to look through and find answers to there questions. Imagine, someone has Mask questions, he can go to the MASK Category and actually see ALL posts pertaining to Masks.....HELLO! Also, because there are more categories, new posts and active posts will stay at the TOP longer and get more attention.
This is really not even an option, the current format is just plain dated and silly and its just a matter of when they get off their tooches and get it done.
Feel free to post your suggestions for categories below or comment on what I propose, here are mine:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Machine discussion: (all questions and suggestions for Machines, etc)
Mask discussion:
Software discussion:
General Health discussion:
General Help needed: (Newbie posts generally fit here)
General Discussion: (for anything that does not fit into the above)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That would about cover it, let me know if you think I missed a big one. Other than that I think this website is great, it really just needs better organization.

Oh okay I get it. Having EVERYTHING lumped into one big category is MUCH better and more organized....
Guess I need a time machine to go back about 30 years to think this is okay too.
Search is great, unless of course you get a bazillion results because you are searching the ENTIRE forum instead of a specific related category.BlackSpinner wrote:Been there, done that - the consensus is NO!

Re: Forum CATEGORIES NEEDED!
Jayjonbeach,
Thanks for your input and ideas. You are welcome to make as many suggestions as you like.
But if it is a matter of your being unable to find the beauty in the present retro approach (I like to think of it as somewhere between free-form jazz and hillbilly hootenanny, maybe a little like an old-fashioned Native American powwow), I suggest you try to learn to find the beauty in the anarchy. It has its own pattern that it may take some time for you to pick up on. Keep listening, and you will learn to enjoy it, as so many of the rest of us have.
With many of the less-successful apnea forums, categories have come to define them. The format here tends to set this place apart as the most successfully-helpful apnea forum on the planet. Many fear that messing with the core format would make us just like too many other apnea forums: mostly dead. We are afraid that then someone would start going through our pockets for loose change. We tend to be more a collection of overly-sociable, but overly-helpful, oddballs with an interesting mix of technical curiosity, community volunteerism, and off-beat humor, so we thrive in a place with few rules, little structure, and a format that lends itself to heartfelt welcome and connectedness.
So, again, welcome. There is no cover charge here--not even a one-drink minimum. Hang out, see who wanders in, and if you see anyone who looks lost or like he or she needs a helping hand, feel free to be helpful. The cool thing about here is that you don't have to wander from room to room--you can see everyone in the whole place from your one barstool, which swivels to see every corner of the room from that one place. It's kinda cool, once you get the hang of it.

Re: Forum CATEGORIES NEEDED!
.
Here is just the very latest thread on the topic that looks like you may have read...
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=54375&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... categories
As you can see from the posts on that thread (and many older ones on the same topic), there will probably never be categories on this forum. It's been a VERY much debated topic. Some folks are EXTREMELY passionate about leaving it the way it is. Although at one time I leaned slightly in the direction of having a few categories, there is just something about this forum that works best, I think, just the way it is.
I understand and agree that when you use "search" you sometimes get what seem like a million posts on the topic. If you're sleep deprived and frustrated, it can seem overwhelming. What I did in that circumstance is just post my question even though it may have been answered before.

Looks like everyone has already closed their mind to improving the site. Oh well. Back to the 80's and your regular scheduled programing, nothing to see here....

No need for you to get on a time machine. Just join another forum more to your liking. Abolutlely no need for you to hang about here. No need at all.Jayjonbeach wrote:Oh okay I get it. Having EVERYTHING lumped into one big category is MUCH better and more organized....

On the contrary, the ONLY thing that is surprising is that the majority like it unorganized.-SWS wrote:EVERY single poll in the history of this message board has returned the same results: the majority here seem to prefer one big happy category.Jayjonbeach wrote: Looks like everyone has already closed their mind to improving the site. Hey if that is what most people want, then that is how it should be, no arguement there.
Now if they just had a "delete thread" button, we could save this now useless discussion from getting in the way of more important topics (note that if there was a general discussion forum, that wouldn't happen! Sorry, just sayin... )
