My New Year's Resolution
Re: My New Year's Resolution
I kind of gave up on making new years resolutions. They were too hard to keep. I kept saying this would be the year I quit smoking. Well the year I quit making new years resolutions is the year I quit smoking. If I hadn't quit, I would have to have a part time job just to pay for the cigarettes with the cost of them and all the taxes on them.
Instead of new years resolutions, I take one day at a time and make the best of it and try to eat well and keep my stress level down.
Maybe I should try yoga

That's a LONG ride, no wonder you're looking so fit, and lost all that weight!dsm wrote:Actually, the ride to work is interesting - starts off going through a gully (Brown's waterhole) that floods in heavy rain (have cycled through it two times whilst in flood - not a smart idea) - then along very quiet suburban roads designated as shared cycleways. Through a train pedestrian subway (Eastwood Station) then can go 1 of 2 ways, one way goes right through where the 2000 Olympics were held, the other through more suburban streets.
Will definitely check out the extra photos after work, Doug.

Re: My New Year's Resolution
Here are the pics from today's ride home
Not as interesting as the pics Carbonman has posted from his rides, but there are some very panoramic views & the Lane Cove national park is pretty in a typical Australian sort of way. The 1st 4.5 Kms of the journey rises to 300ft higher that the start then dips around Eastwood and further towards Brown's waterhole & then rises back to the 300 ft above mark again at which point I am home. In some of the pics on page 1 you might be able to make out
the 2000 olympics stadium which is close by where I started from.
At the waterhole, the path was 1 foot underwater just a few days ago. That area floods fast & quickly & deeply.
Another comment is notice how quiet the streets are that I ride on, very little traffic. There is only 1 1km section where I ride on the footpath to avoid heavy vehicles otherwise the roads are clear & many have designated cycle paths as indicated by the stenciled cycle on the roadway.

PS these pic were taken using an iPhone, some while on the move
There are 24 in total - 12 on each of 2 pages.

Carbonman - you will recognise this image I am sure - DSM was from the trip to work this morning ...

What a lovely way to start the day, Doug. Thank you for sharing those pics -- and please be very careful with that iphone on the bike. A second cousin of mine caused himself a bad leg injury as a result of attempting ot answer his cellphone when riding a bike -- and this was no newcomer to cycling.
Enjoy many healthy trips!
What was the temprature down there, by the way?

Yes I was very conscious of using the camera - I have as mentioned, had a lot of practice at falling off
The temp in the morning is around 18C & in the afternoon can be 24C-34C Last month I did a ride home when it was 36C.
Do you have the opportunity to ride where you are ?
Cheers

Re: My New Year's Resolution
dsm, very cool!
What a great commute for you.
O, I agree....what a way to start/end your day.
Really good pics from a phone.
..yea, I know profiles.
Thinking of a ride.....where's the profile?
I use DeLorme TOPO for all my route/profiling stuff.
Thanks! for doing that.
I'll see you on the road....now that I know what to look for.

Re: My New Year's Resolution
Thanks Doug, the pics are fantastic - love the one in particular with the sun shafting through (is that a word?!) fourth from the end.
Looks like a great ride, and the National Park must be the icing on the cake, a lovely natural area.

Carbonman
- I hadn't heard of the DeLorme TOPO but it looks very useful. I see that Apple have an iPhone app that does GPS tracking plus the other inputs. Seems you download the data to your PC & can replay the journey spatially !.
I use an older Polar S725X which normally adds temp as well as altitude and speed + heart rate. I have a cadence sensor as well but not being into distance & paced riding I haven't fitted it yet. It seems the technology that is coming our way is just getting smarter & smarter.
Am guessing there is already a device that can use 3G networks to transmit a journeys data over the web to a website where you can review it. Next will be a video feed as well .
Grandmma,
The browns waterhole segment is about 1.5 kms of the journey & is very refreshing (too much so when flooded )
That pic with the light streaming is a view I don't normally see as I am riding the other way. Got that pic when I stopped to take a pic back towards the spillway.
Several years ago the intention was to run a motorway right thru there from Wahroonga (F2) to join up with the M2 motorway. I cycle under the M2 on the way home just before entering the National Park. That sign is approx 100ft from the M2. Thankfully it has side barriers & it doesn't show in the pics but is there in the pic just before the National Park sign.
The other nice aspect of this area is that it is a very treed area & the local council hang people caught cutting down trees without permits which are very hard to get

Re: My New Year's Resolution
dsm, technology is consuming us.....at an incredible rate.
When I used to ride w/heart rate monitor I had 5 computers on board.
cyclo computer
heart rate monitor
GPS
garage door opener
camera
I gave up the HRM years ago and only carry the GPS for rides I want specific data on.
So, through the incredible technology available to us, I found
Lone Cove Park and the intersection of Vimiera Rd and Balaclava Rd.
Nice areas of parks locked in the city.
I think I actually saw you on the bike path.
It must be a nightmare to find an address in Sydney.
There is no order or grid to the streets.
Looks very helter-skelter.
I would love to see it on a bike.
Thanks! for sharing.

Re: My New Year's Resolution
Honestly, never heard of Browns Waterhole, which is a bit sad since we frequent more or less the same areas! Will look for it now, & make sure camera is in tow! (Any date in particular you're planning to cross a road hump in the area...? )dsm wrote:The browns waterhole segment is about 1.5 kms of the journey & is very refreshing (too much so when flooded )

Go to your room
DSM
(but I'll let you know (on the anniversary) should it happen)
By the way, just follow the map to the end of Vimera Rd, goes under the M2 & comes out at the top on the Marsfield side or,
Go to Kissing Point Rd Turramurra & go to the bottom of it, that puts you at the other side. It is a very
nice walk.

Ah, it's part of Lane Cove National Park? Grew up in that area, more or less! Pathetic!

Not really. Jerusalem is very hilly, not at all cyclists oriented yet, when it rains (winter only) it pours, and summer is hot and dry. And most workplaces don't have a place for you to shower....dsm wrote:
