Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
Hi, I am going to use a deep cycle AGM battery that is 12 V and 35 AH (amp hours) to power my CPAP when there is no electricity available. I use this when camping. For those of you that don't know, it is similiar in size to a car battery:
Can I bring it with me, along with my CPAP machine, laptop bag, and purse as a carry on for a later camping trip? Will TSA allow it? And also if I use it on the flight, where do I put it, since the CPAP machine must be on the same level as my head, according to the manufacturer (it can't be on the floor, for example).

Also, if I can't take the AGM, I am planning to use this device CPAP called "Airing". It is powerless, super tiny, hoseless, maksless, and cordless. Has anyone here used this? Would insurance pay for this? This would be so much more convenient than using a bulky CPAP machine and AGM battery.

Ahhh...thanks you for that. I should have searched first! After reading a few of those threads, it seems like the object might be a scam and the guy is just looking for funds. That was back in 2015. Bt it just appeared as an ad in the San Francisco Chronicle, so I thought it was legit. I think now it is too good to be true.palerider wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 12:31 amRead, and be amazed:

The Airing is vaporware.
Just think about it. You want to bring a 35 AH battery to give your PAP the power it needs to move air at pressure for hours. The "Airing" claims to do the same work using hearing aid batteries. Not gonna happen.
Here is what a battery powered wearable CPAP looks like:

Not saying technology can't make this smaller, but insert in your nose smaller? Not any time soon.

Re: Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
I think they will probably object to a battery that large. I know there was a limit to how many laptop batteries, etc. Check the TSA website and ask if you don't find it.
Where did it say to keep the machine at the same level as your head? Most of us put our machine lower so that any water or condensation will go down into the hose and not into our face. I have never used the machine at the same level as my head.

Re: Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
Ditto re being below your head...
Re: Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
You can put the machine at any level. Doesn't matter one bit in terms of affecting how it works.
You could even put it up over your head... though there is the risk of knocking you on the head though if it gets pulled off.
You can indeed put it on the floor if you wish and in fact a lot of people do that for any number of reason...condensation prevention (allows water in the hose to try to use gravity to drain back into the humidifier) or even get the motor noise further away from our ears so machine noise less annoying.
I doubt if TSA will let you carry that battery on with you.
It might be one of those situation where you have to buy it when you get there.

Re: Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
Just to be clear, they are about half the size of a car battery. They weigh in a 24 pounds, while car batteries are 50-65 pounds.
I don't think that there is a rule forbidding AGM batteries, as they are treated as sealed batteries. And they don't fall under the restrictive Lithium regs. However, it will depend a lot on the inspector. And at 24 pounds it will put a crimp on your carry on, and could easily put you into the extra charge zone! I would consult with the airline, you could point out this is medical equipment. And try to get a letter to show agents.
The other approach is to ship it, or even purchase with delivery at the destination. The U1 size is commonly found in mobility scooters so you get them over the counter in any city, but not with the Amazon pricing. I've also seen similar and smaller AGMs at places like Pep Boys and Harbor Freight.

Re: Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
[emphasis added]Nonspillable wet batteries (absorbed electrolyte),limited to 12 volts and 100 watt hours per battery. These batteries must be the absorbed electrolyte type (gel cells, AGM, etc.) that meet the requirements of 49 CFR 173.159a(d); i.e., no electrolyte will flow from a cracked battery case.
Batteries must be in strong outer packagings or installed in equipment. Passengers are also limited to two (2) spare (uninstalled) batteries. Spare batteries’ terminals must be protected (non-conductive caps, tape, etc.) within the outer packaging. Batteries and outer packaging must be marked “nonspillable” or “nonspillable battery.”
Note: This exception is for portable electronic devices, not for vehicle batteries. There are separate exceptions for powered wheelchairs.

Your 35 AH AGM is 420 watt hours. Way too big to bring as a carry on.

Re: Can I take a 35 amp hour AGM battery for my CPAP on a domestic airline flight?
I stand corrected! And the 100 Watt-hour applies to checked luggage also, so you'll be limited to about 8 amp-hour per battery. You could get a 7-8 AH battery that would work for a short term, but you'd be doing tedious charging every day.Stom wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 8:24 amhttps://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/he ... teries.pdf
