Dust bowl days of the 1930's. Oh, and tobacco farmers are not a proper group for comparison. Their product is not needed to sustain life.
I am not denying the need for some taxes, Julie. The need for a certain amount of taxes is obvious and normal. One of our country's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin once said, "the two things guaranteed in life are death and taxes." He was being semi-sarcastic and funny even, but its true.
The issue down here is TOO MUCH taxation. Its out of hand down here. Too much taxation makes it where the government takes so much of people's earned income that it starts to eventually erode the incentive to even work anymore. If there is nothing in work for you, why bother working? That is what the "big government" espoused by obama and similar leftist democrats believe in. Its all about how big they can get the government.
If that's the case then please explain why during the period of probably the highest tax rates in this nation, the 1950's, we also had quite probably the highest economic growth ever.

Idamtnboy, tax rates were higher in the '50s but almost nobody paid those rates because there were far more legal tax deductions and loopholes than there are now. What matters is what is actually coming out of your pocket, not the rates per se. Businesses in particular were more competitive on the world stage than they are now because they retained far more of their earnings for re-investment. American workers were the most productive in the world at the time and the US manufactured goods for export despite the much lower wages in other countries. That is no longer the case because of high taxes and a very uncertain outlook which discourages investment.

The irony is that the guy with the money bag has no better friend than Barack Obama.
Crony capitalists have never had it so good.

Nah, that propaganda photo does not sum up the Tea Party/GOP relationship at all. The Tea Party is heavily concerned with financial issues as it is other issues. Probably more so. That photo is not even relevant. The reason for the Tea party is because of the RINO factor in modern era GOP circles. Americans who are conservative just dont like the GOP, the RINOs in it.
The Tea party and the current GOP dont even like one another. The issue is there is a fundamental split in America not seen since I dont know when.

Now some folks they wait
And some folks they pray
For jesus to rise up again
But none of these folks
In their holy cloaks
Ever took billy on as a friend
For pity's a crime
And it ain't worth a dime
To a person who's really in need
Just treat 'em the same
As you would your own name
Next time that your heart starts to bleed

Anyone else notice that the OP dropped this stink bomb and promptly left the building? Hasn't been seen since page 1.

SleepyBobR wrote:Romney's comments clearly disabled his campaign but, to be fair, is there really no problem when the number of people in the US who don't pay any federal income tax is almost 50% and keeps growing? A huge and growing dependent class may be good for the Democrats but it can't be good for the country. Is there anyone here who really doesn't believe that generous entitlements can discourage initiative and are ultimately harmful to some people? People on social assistance lose a dollar of welfare assistance for every dollar earned discouraging them from taking the only jobs that may be available to them because they would be working for nothing. People should always come out ahead after a days work. The tax system should be used to ensure that work is always financially rewarding, encouraging people to try to become independent. No country on Earth spends more money than the US on social programs of all kinds but, 50 years after LBJ's War on Poverty, there has emerged a culture of dependency or partial dependency in the US that simply didn't exist before. I don't have the solution but I suspect it won't be to just continue increasing entitlement spending while vilifying business and capital and driving out the real investments needed to create jobs, wealth and prosperity for all.
These ideas are more representative of Canadians in general than two or three ladies who post over and over here.
These ideas also make perfectly good sense. A citizenry who works and takes pride in their work builds a good country one person at a time.

If that's the case, he's "related" to MANY liberals on the forum, too.
(I did a forum search on the "F-words" and give a slight edge to the liberals for usage......many were of unknown political views.)
Merry Christmas.

That guy in the picture, holding a bag of money, sure looks alot like Roger Teeter of "Teeter Hangups" commercials. Probably not him, but there's a strong resemblance.

Sleepybob: yes, according to the IRS 50% who file owe no federal taxes: because they've already paid them through their automatic pay check deductions. I didn't "owe" the IRS either when I FILED my taxes: the IRS owed me, because I'd overpaid during the course of the year through my paycheck deductions. Unemployment is high in the U.S., but it's not 50%.

Hegel, it's about the total federal income tax bill for the entire year, not the year end true-up. If a person pays a thousand dollars over the year in payroll deductions and then gets it all back in a refund then they've paid no federal income tax for the year. Of course the unemployment rate isn't 50%. A person doesn't need to be unemployed to pay no federal income tax. Far from it. With the personal exemption and deductions along with tax credits, some of them refundable, many people are in this category. Hard to believe but it is what it is. Note that this doesn't mean these people pay no taxes at all. They are still subject to sales taxes and all the other taxes we all face.
