Just did a windows restore back to Thursday, before any installs.

Installed encore pro, no issues.
Installed smart card software from encore cd, no issues.
Reboot.
Connected reader to usb port, detected reader, then walked me through automatically detecting and installing the drivers. After is was done it said device is ready for use.
Device manager says device is functioning properly.

But...........................
Infineer software utility can't see it, and neither can encore pro.

I'M ALL OUT OF TRICKS.....JUST SHOOT ME AND PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY!!!!!

Did you re-boot after the install?

Did you check in the Encore Pro software to see if it was set for USB instead of serial port?

Have you tried a different USB port? (this is most likely your problem)

BP,

Far be it for some little nobody like me to suggest something so obvious to you who has such a vast knowledge of computers/software, but you never know if something is just overlooked. When I installed my software/card reader, I had to install the Respironics update first and then install my drivers before I connected the card reader. I don't know why, but you have to install the drivers to get it to work, even though it should be an automatic thing. You have to go into the CD and use the directory for Smard Card Drivers and go through the setup. I don't know if you did that. Probably a hundred times, right? I am not reading back to the older threads this morning, sorry.

You are the first person so far, IF you don't get it to work, to not be able to use the 2factors card reader. Do you have access to anyone else's card reader so you can see if perhaps it's defective? I am highly doubting it because it's usually something either so minute or unexplainable and then you get it to work. How about PM'g the brain, Derek, and see what he has to say? Maybe he's encountered this before.

Please let us know if you get lucky with the thing and get it working. I am so sorry you're going through such frustration with this just to get it to work. This is probably harder than it was to get used to therapy itself.

If you reread my previous post you will see a reboot in there. Yes I did a reboot.

When you install the usb drivers, encore pro automatically selects usb in it's preferences, but yes usb is selected. But, at this point I'm not even talking about encore pro, I can't even get the infineer software to detect it's own device. (In case someone wasn't aware there is a small application that gets installed, when you install the card reader drivers, that is a utility app for the reader itself).

I have tried a different usb port, but that shouldn't make any difference. Unless the port is physically bad/defective, any usb port should work. Having said that, there is some hardware that insists on being attached directly to a port on the pc, i.e. not connected to a usb hub, but I have it attached directly to a port on the pc.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm thinking the reader is bad. It looks like Mako has tech support, I may call them next week. Any additional ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,
BP

Lori, thanks for your response they have been very helpful.

Can you clarify, what do you mean by update. Do you mean the service pack on respironics website? I did install encore pro first, like you said you have to to install the drivers.

When I first asked you to run the infineer utility you said that you could see your device in the "select reader" dropdown list. I never see mine. So leaving encore pro out of the picture, I can't even get the infineer utility to see the card reader. This is most likely why encore pro can't see it either.

Thanks,
BP

Lori, thanks. When you see Infineer , Inc. USB 0 in the list that means the software does detect the device. Each usb port has number starting with 0, so that means it found the device on usb port 0. Mine says no readers found, meaning it can't find a device.

Encore pro has a test in the preferences to see if it can connect to sql server, and that works fine for me.

Techincally, you should be able to use the card reader for any software that "can" use it. That's why I am looking at the infineer utility. That should work regarless of whether encore pro works since it's accessing the reader directly. If this works and encore pro doesn't, then there is probably something wrong with the encore pro install, but if the software that comes with the reader can't even see it, then there are bigger issues.

Having said that, at some point I will do another reinstall, just sick of messing with it right now. Sure wish I had a known working reader to try out. That could easily eliminate several things.

Thanks again,
BP

Lori, if you get a chance do me a favor. Select Infineer , Inc. USB 0 from your select reader list, and then do a reader status. I think you might get something different than what you got before.

Thanks,
BP

BP,

Knowing as much as you do about computer-related issues, you have to know that sometimes you can't explain what happens rationally and by doing something simple it can fix the problem. Maybe this all has something to do with a corrupted dll or something really simple from when you installed the software. I hear what you're saying about it should work with other programs as well, but I don't always go for the rational when it's computer-related.

When you're up to giving it another go, I would just start totally from scratch, making sure to turn off the anti-virus software you're running, and see how it goes step by step. So sorry you're having such a time with something that should just work simply. My gut feeling is, it's not the reader being defective as I went through this with Yawn (Amy) too and she got hers finally to work just be the uninstall/reinstalling process. Maybe something just goes wrong sometimes...as, unfortunately, in your case.

Lori, sorry to keep hammering this home, but the reader software is the key. Since yours can see your reader an mine can't, that tells me something is wrong, exclusive of encore pro. But, yeah I'm going to do another restore and try a few other things later. Would you mine doing that additional test I mentioned in my last post?

Thanks for your invaluable help,
BP

I have had the same problem on my computer since I got the reader and software. I have tried everything except reading over this tread.

I had it loaded on my daughters computer with it working until one of her Win Xp updates killed it. Now it does not work there either.

Hopefully, someone has an answer but Respironics has been nothing but a problem with this software....

Ahh, since I have automatic updates turn on I may have the offending update as well.

Anyone else completely up-to-date with XP security patches and still have the software working?

Thanks,
BP

ABSOLUTELY!!! XP, SP2, all patches updated.....everything working just fine.
On the other hand, I purchased the software and reader package from CPAP.COM and followed ALL the directions to the letter.

It seems like everyone that's gone the "cheap" route and bought the reader from the overseas vendor has had problems with installing it. When all is said and done, I doubt if they really saved all that much.

Sounds like you had it right a few posts ago, a bad reader.
