Make sure you diasble any firewalls and virus protection while you are installing - this makes a big difference. I got this advice before I installed, and did not have a problem.

[quote="BP"]Sorry Lori, what I wanted was to actually select the device in the drop down list, not just view it, just as if you would select any item from a drop down list. That will actually load the device into the utility software. They do this because you may have multiple card readers on a given machine, and they want to know which one to work with. Remember, mako/infineer don't have any direct association with encore pro, or respironics for that matter. You can use this reader with any software that has the capability.

biggziff, actually did what I wanted. This proves that the utility detects the reader fine. This would most likely be the case even if you used the drivers from their site, and never even installed encore pro. Now, of course, encore pro would not work since they have some "special" drivers for the reader.

Thanks all.

Used to be that some Av software would really cause issues due to the realtime scanners. Most of the newer stuff has an API built in to stop this behavior when installing new software. There are exceptions to every situation, of course.

Firewalls won't be an issue. This software doesn't communicate outside of the "sandbox" of your OS.

I installed with AV and firewalls running. No issues. BP's issue almost sounds like the eprom in the reader has some or all of it's firmware corrupted.

Lori, what you sent me yesterday was the system imformation, that details what version of windows and the drivers are loaded on you pc. This time I wanted to see if the utility could actually see the reader. biggziff got it for me, but thanks a lot for the effort.

I actually don't run anit-virus software since I have a hardware based firewall, and all of the ports locked down, there's really no need. The only way in to my machine would be because of user error, opening an email attachment, saying yes to some malicious download etc., and since I know better haven't had a problem for years. And, yeah firewalls don't affect the reader.

I just tried only installing the drivers that came with the reader, no encore pro, nothing else. The infineer utility software still couldn't see the reader.

Now I'm going to try another machine, but that will take some time since I have to repartition the harddrive and reinstall xp. What a fun way to spend a weekend. On the up side, I feel so damn good as a result ot my cpap therapy that I have this boundless energy. Not sure my hands will hold up to all this typing though.

Till the next update........

Hi, smiley! Glad to see the face behind the name. Nice photo! I am taking it for my own evil purposes (the online yearbook). LOL. If you don't want me to use it, let me know. Otherwise, consider yourself added to the next update.

I assume you're talking to me? If so, sure, you can use it. It's not the best photo of me, but the one that best reduced to a small enough "avatar" size .

CG,

If you have another photo you would like to send me to put in the yearbook update, please let me know and I'll PM you my email address. If you're not happy with this happy photo, which I think shows a sweet personality, it's your call. I'll post whichever one you want me to. Just let me know.

A sweet personality?! That's what people say when they think you're ugly!!!

J/k. You're the photo guru, so I'll go with your opinion. If you like it, then go for it.

Okay, now you're getting me angry...not good ! What I mean is, your smile gives away the personality behind it, which looks very happy and kind. Don't make me feel bad now that I said the wrong words. You read way too much into them. I think it's a great, happy, smiling photo of a beautiful young woman. I would go with it. Now DON'T read more than what I wrote into this. What is it with we women? Can't we ever just accept a compliment and say "Thank you"???

Lori, did you miss my j/k? I was only kidding! I absolutely can take a compliment, and thank you for yours. Judging from the way I saw you joking with someone else, I wanted to joke with you too. I'll be more careful from now on. (And I KNOW you have a sense of humor, so don't read too much into what *I* just said )

IT WORKS!!!!

Installed a spankin fresh copy of windows on another pc that I have, and everything worked first time. Well, almost first time, the cdrom on that machine is apparently going bad, just my luck, so in the middle of my installs it would just disappear from the device list, but after 10 or so reboots and refreshing the device list I managed to keep it up long enough to get encore pro and the drivers installed.

But, anyway it's working, so I'm guess there is a software issue on my primary machine. I personally think it's a windows security update, someone else mentioned their's was working before an update and not after.

BTW,
1. The update and SP1 from respironics has NO impact on this at all. Nice to have but doesn't affect this.
2. I know my usb port is good since I was just using it for my ipod.

My machine is working fine otherwise so I'm kind of in the dark now. I could start uninstalling security updates, but that is a pain.

Thanks for everyone's help. At this point I would say be careful installing windows updates until I figure the rest of this out.

BTW CollegeGirl you're hot, don't let mean ol Lori make fun of you that way. I'm surprised at you Lori.

Time for bed, whew, what a day!!!!!!

BP,

I'm glad you have at least narrowed down that it's something on your machine. If it helps, I definitely have the most recent windows XP service pack update, and have had no problems. Perhaps it's another sort of conflict?

Oh, and thank you for YOUR compliment as well. (See Lori, I really *can* take compliments! )

College Girl,

This is what I HATE about emails and the like. You can't hear how someone says what they type. I was one hundred percent fooling around right back. I never meant seriously that I was mad at you. Oh, now I feel terrible. Please KNOW I was not at all mad or even slightly annoyed. Never, ever. Now, if you keep thinking like that...I shouldn't even have written that or it may be take the wrong way . See? Smiley face!!!

BP,

YAHOO! So it was something going on inside your computer and not the reader. I really didn't think it was. Those 2factors readers have never been defective yet. Any time anyone ever has a problem installing them, their instinct is to think it's the reader because they were sold to us at such a great price. I think we're so used to being ripped off that if we don't pay a lot for something, we tend to think it may be seconds or inferior because we're not paying as much.

In any event, I am so glad you can relax now and finally use your software. So how did you do on your readings last night???
