SmartCard Reader Not Detected!!!
Lori, I didn't think it was defective because of the price, I have been buying cheap computer parts for many years, I always search for the cheapest price.
No, the reason I thought it was the reader was that, occassionally hardware is bad out of the box, not often, but it certainly happens. And, I had ruled out almost everything else. I know my usb port is good, and I know my machine has been running fine, so what else could it be. That has still not been resolved. While yes the software does work, I really can't use this other machine on a daily basis, for one thing I have to replace the cdrom, and it's a lot slower than my main machine.
So now, I guess I'm going to start applying service packs and security patches and see when it breaks, or IF it breaks.
As far as last night, I've been using my 420e for a week or so now. I found that my Remstar passive humidifier really tames the noise of any machine really well. So my ahi was about .7 which is fairly normal for me.
CollegeGirl, I think it might be a recent security patch not a service pack, that was ruled out a few posts ago, I think. Do you have all the latest security patches?
Keep you informed...

I'm having reader problems as well.
When I plug the reader in, it seems to crap out my computer. The USB mouse movement is very erratic, and the sound stutters. Processor (+4400) activity reads 50% with nothing running ? Some kind of USB conflict, I'm guessing, but beats me how to fix it.
When I put the smartcard in, the light blinks red rapidly, constantly. Is this normal ?
Of course neither the Mako utility or EncorePro see the card.

biggziff, still can't get this damn thing to work on my primary pc. Every other usb device works fine except this card reader. One of the strangest things I've ever seen. The device manager says it's working properly etc. but the utility can't see it. It's funny p&p and usb makes things easy to install, but when it doesn't work there's nothing to debug. IRQs were a pain, but you could debug the issue to some extent. I have unplugged every usb device except my mouse and the reader, no help.
I've run out of ideas at this point. Do you have any more?
Thanks for your help,
BP

Errr, sorry about the name confusion, BP. I was talking to someone named Ken in the forum chat room at the same time. That's what I get for multi-tasking. Sorry this still hasn't worked out for you. I wish I could offer some other form of help. As it is, all I can do is keep offering you some good luck wishes. Oh, and try to get your name right.
Thanks for the reply, biggziff.
I'll try the BIOS update, but I have a fairly new build. New MB (DFI Lanparty NF4 ) with dualcore +4400 processor.
"USB root controller drivers? You got me on that one ?
"pull the USB system components out of device manager" How is this done ?
I'm pretty sure it's a driver problem, I seem to remember a hiccup when I first plugged the reader in, but I can't seem to be able to get XP back to the "found new hardware" stage. For some reason, all my system restore points don't seem to work either.
Thanks for any help.

either go into devicemanager, set to view hidden devices and find the USB root controllers and uninstall them (that'll remove the actual USB chipset from the OS profile), then reboot, or if the USB interfaces aren't built right on the mobo, open the case and pull the ribbon cable for all USB interfaces, reboot and confirm they're gone from device manager and shut down, plug 'em back in and reboot.
