Got a reprieve and I made some keto lasagna (egg/cheese noodles), which turned out as one of the best tasting 'mock' meals thus far. Wife was pissed when I told her how much cheese went into noodles though - for her, dietary fats are still unhealthy, indulgent foods eaten by people too weak to restrict their caloric intake.

She went shopping yesterday and got some lentils, whole-wheat pasta etc., and I can totally understand that she is trying to shop healthy for the family and it has to suck having a husband who keeps discouraging those items. As has been said earlier, the best approach for me will probably be a combination of daytime fasting with intermittent consumption of small portions of complex, non-refined carbs. This is actually not far off of the recommendations in Fung's 'Obesity Code' book. As far as I can tell, he never advocates a strictly ketogenic diet (although he doesn't discourage it either, and I can certainly see the appeal). I think I've made it clear that I'm ready to go 'all keto', but it's looking like this will be difficult for my family although I haven't given up yet.

Will definitely do some blood sugar curves to see impact of different meals... any recommendations on duration/sample interval that will best depict spikes?

Thanks for the recommendation... I just downloaded it and will start to read it.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Glad that was useful - I quite enjoyed reading it, and thought it was persuasive and informative. It helped put a lot of my prior experiences with weight, diet, and exercise into perspective.

One of the keto things I've appreciated more than I'd have expected is fasting. I used to religiously observe all meal times, particularly breakfast and lunch. Skipping either was unthinkable, and often this complicated things and left me in a fog after many a too-big lunch. I have only done 24 hour fasts so far, but am amazed at how good it feels (energy great, hunger really not an issue). That probably would have been very difficult to do while still on carbs, due to the intensity of hunger/cravings.

I just made some bone broth, and am figuring out the logistics of how to store and portion it. Should have thought ahead and bought a suitable container for freezing some - if anyone here has tricks would be thrilled to hear.

Great thread! I'm not doing keto but am doing AIP (auto-immune protocol or paleo) and bone broth is something I make weekly. I have glass mason jars (6 oz. - 8 oz.) that are freezable (check the label). Makes is very easy to "heat and eat" as I just pop the lid off and nuke them straight from the freezer.

In a large container, put baggies filled with cooled broth. Freeze and store in another big freezer bag. Mark with date and contents,
Note: always fill baggies inside a container!

I've always liked oxtail soup which is easy to make as long as you can find the oxtails (yep, that's the tails of beef steers cut up into disks). We usually put barley in that soup but I suppose I could just use vegetables instead. Anyone know if that's approved by the Obesity Code diet We put white wine in it for extra 'tangyness', therefore we can cut way back on the salt. It does have a lot of natural gelatin in it from the oxtails, that's what makes it seem very filling.

I got big silicone ice cube molds. Each cube is 1/3 cup. Very convenient to toss in however many are needed for a recipe or sauce and they thaw more quickly than other containers. Some people use silicone or even metal muffin pans.

Leptic, I test 1 and 2 hours after the first bite of each meal to see how blood sugar trends.

If you add a test just before you eat you can see what that particular meal does to your blood sugar. Anything over a 20 point increase is a spike and you should omit the offending food from your diet.

I belong to a facebook group "Type 2 Diabetes Rebels" where we discuss all this and more. You're welcome to join if you would like.

Great suggestion - there's a huge kitchen ware store near us that's having a liquidation sale. I need to go scout out this stuff (my wife is worried I'm getting a little too domesticated...)

Sigh - my wife keeps (gleefully) sending me links like this one...

The above article is very 'pop sci' but links against another summary by the UK's NHS entitled Low-fat diet 'better' than low-carb diet for getting rid of body fat. I have not read the actual article yet.

To me, the study is not really relevant because the low-carb diet they evaluate is also a caloric restriction diet (which is not what Fung recommends). The participants are obese individuals who are kept in jail-like conditions and only evaluated over a six-day period. The behavioural aspects (what would a normal person actually eat) are not taken into account and in my personal experience these are huge, given the relation between insulin and cravings.

Warning to the keto-ers here: your blood pressure will go up reading the NHS page...

Low/restricted carb is how some commercial weight loss centers are able to get significant weight loss.
Sadly, carbs are much harder to avoid in the real world.
