That isn't true in the case of the Earned Income Tax Credit. It is a so-called "non-wastable" tax credit that can be paid even when there is no income tax liability to offset it against, making it, in some cases, a form of negative income tax for those with low incomes.

Good point. You are correct. Thanks for clarifying.

However if someone pays taxes but pays less in taxes because of the EIC then my point stands as is true with any other tax break or "loophole". They are not "taking" anything from the government. If someone pays no taxes but gets a check because of the EIC, then that is a different thing altogether and I would not support that. That person is "taking" from the government.

But I wonder....if it is a tax loophole for someone who pays some taxes even after the EIC, is it also a tax loophole for the person who pays $0 taxes but gets a tax rebate check because of the EIC? I guess it would depend on who you ask.

The other example given was that the person in the article took medicare benefits so he is a hypocrite. However he paid for those benefits when Uncle took the payment for those benefits from his check every week. So I don't think it is hypocrisy to oppose expansion of government while taking the benefit of government programs that have been paid for by the alleged hypocrite.

I guess tax loopholes are only for the privileged and government benefits are only for the "poor".

PS....If you want to know how wonderful "free" Obamacare will be just take a look at how well and efficiently medicare/medicaid is run. No thanks.

Newbie here and this thread is a pleasant surprise.

Oh not that I want to discuss politics here, but I've been on other forums regarding other issues and when politics is mentioned people get NASTY. There were a couple of borderline comments here but mostly people are respectful and that is a good sign. If everyone in the country was respectful of differences and willing to address the issues (be it CPAP machines or tax credits) with an open mind, we might get somewhere instead of spinning wheels incessantly.

Just an fyi- President Obama was here in Orlando yesterday. His visit wrapped up during rush hour arriving at the MCO airport to jet off at arond 530pm, talk about a traffic night mare. Road closures and big time delays...to be expected I guess.
