My son called this morning and wondered why I never told him a baby was a 24/hour a day job! And he's not even the one doing the breastfeeding!!

I remember people telling me when I was pregnant "you won't even have time to go to the bathroom with a new baby" and I thought they must be crazy. . . Until I had a baby Oy!

The first six weeks of your new child's life are a rollercoaster of moments of stupendous joy and others of deep despair when you think there is no possible way you can take care of this tiny, beautiful, voracious, screaming, pooping human-like thing. And then, the baby smiles at you with that toothless grin and sleeps 4 hours in a row (and so do you!), and life is good again.

Fasten your seat belt, it's gonna be a bumpy ride (but a very sweet one, too!).

Janknitz, Thanks, I just forwarded your post to the new parents, very sweet and so true. I thought it would be good for them to know they're not the only ones who go through this rough period.

We lost our second child in a very similar manner and it took some time to recover from the trauma. I empathize with you. That was 18 years ago for us. The next year we had a baby boy, who is now 17. And our little girl is 19 and in second year of college planning on a career in medicine. Both Honour Roll high school students and great kids. We still think about our loss almost twenty years later. So, from the heart, we applaud your courage and congratulate you on your good news. We wish that your family will bring you much pride and joy in future - go with the flow. The Great Architect works in mysterious ways - we still ask 'why' - but look forward at the same time and take every moment of enjoyment that we are able to from the kids. They grow up so very fast and the next thing you know they are out the door. As the happy day approaches please remember this and take every second of enjoyment that you can from them, guide them and love them unconditionally as I know that you will and be prepared for the challenges that come with parenting; nobody said it was going to be easy. But I know that for us? We would not trade it for all the tea in China. And when we start to get our knickers in a twist about garbage night and he forgot to take out the garbage, we remember all of the joy, pride and happiness that they have brought to our lives and how good they really are (no drugs, no alcohol, great students, solid friends, and so on).

Wising you the best of luck and good times in future. And don't get dressed up to go out to a wedding when the kids are feeling sick and then pick them up to kiss them goodbye.

Oy is right. I can still recall the first weeks of our daughter's life.... I wound up at the emerg at the local hospital with a pounding heart and rapid heart beat, terrible headache and chills and so on. I was on death's door I was sure. "When was the last time you had something to eat or drink?" was all they asked and then I realized that I was so busy running around and enjoying the experience that I had not eaten nor had a drink in three days. I was dehydrated. Drank a bunch. Ate a bunch. Couple hours later I was running around again. THOSE were the days! Now she has decided to be a doctor and is in her second year of college so I will be working until I am 90 (at least). And enjoying every second of it while complaining bitterly. She is upstairs working on a summer school assignment and has to be up for work for 7 a.m. tomorrow at Home Depot where we don't even get the benefit of a discount! (Trying to get her to switch jobs to a donut shop).

So sorry everyone. Didn't mean to leave you in limbo!

Baby Jonah arrived at 6:24 pm PST on 7/9/2010. 8 lbs, 3 oz. 20.5 inches long. Mama and papa are doing great. We are all getting into a routine. He is a bit jaundiced but is otherwise healthy and eating from the boob readily.

Without further ado:
