REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
Oh please give me a break! Haven't you ever watched AFV? Plenty of horrible yet funny things get caught on video.

Deuce has nightmares, but I know why. He is a Huricane Katrina Survivor and he is reliving that period in time.

Yes, I've watched America's Funniest Home Videos and have laughed at some of the harmless funny things that have been captured.nobody wrote:Oh please give me a break! Haven't you ever watched AFV? Plenty of horrible yet funny things get caught on video.
I don't equate "horrible" with "funny", though.
Let me ask you this... if that video had been of a sleeping 6 year old child going through the same kind of flailing motions while dreaming, and the child suddenly got up and ran from the bed and slammed into the wall with that kind of force, would you have laughed?
I don't anthropomorphize dogs, but I don't like to see any living creature hurt. That had to have hurt. I don't think watching any animal getting hurt is funny.

I softly call Deuce by name and tell him he is safe, he then stops.
I do not like any animal videos because you never know what the person is doing to that animal behind the camera to get the reactions we see.

Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
You must not find much funny on it then because on any given broadcast they have all kinds of clips with some pretty horrible-yet-funny accidents...with kids, with dogs, with cats, etcrested gal wrote: Yes, I've watched America's Funniest Home Videos and have laughed at some of the harmless funny things that have been captured.
If someone were purposefully hurting it, then you might have a point. It was obviously an accident and there was nothing anyone could do about it at the time. I suppose they could have woke it up, but I wouldn't have. Some dogs react by attacking when they are woke up. I would hope that the owners would take it to get some medical treatment, but judging by their other similar videos, I doubt they do or the treatment is not working 100%. It is a sad situation for the dog, but it was still a funny video. They should send it in to AFV, I bet it would win the money prize.I don't anthropomorphize dogs, but I don't like to see any living creature hurt. That had to have hurt. Then you are not a true animal lover.
the dog should be checked out and if nothing to be done for it, put it to sleep.
No animal should go through life suffering like this dog.

Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
Seems to me there are different types of "funny". Some things are just plain laughable in about everyone's estimation. The funniness of some things depends on the bent of the observer. And there is the incredulous laugh when one sees something so unusual it's almost unbelievable. In these times maybe some of what is seen strikes one funny, although the whole situation may not be.
Kinda like when someone trips and falls on the sidewalk - we know to make sure they're ok before laughing, but sometimes it's hard to refrain. But, if we saw that exact same trip happen while the person was carrying an infant or result in falling in front of a moving bus, the action would contain no humor at all.
To me personally, I think these dog videos are sad in that I know that this poor dog must be miserable. However, some of the movements are so unusual that they in themselves are somewhat humorous. I can only relate it to personal experiences. My home videos of my limb movements are that incredulous type of funny. Although sleep disorders have nearly destoyed my life, the wild flailing movements are absolutely laughable. (A few of you here know that's true! ) I showed the video to some girlfriends at work, and they at first they kept looking at me to try to figure out how I expected them to respond. One was very sensitive and said, Kathy, I'm sorry you're going through this." Another I could tell was about to burst. I said, "It's ok to laugh." She asked, "Are you sure?" When I affirmed that it was ok, she hit the floor rolling and howling. And I didn't mind.
My father did bizarre things in his sleep, and some of them we laughed about, even though there was nothing funny about his condition. What teen wouldn't laugh at a grown man jumping up and down on his bed and punching the ceiling? But we certainly didn't laugh when he threatened to shoot us in his sleep.
Our very varied personalities influence our sense of humor. My unpopular opinion has always been that The Three Stooges were not funny. But I laughed at the dog running in its sleep. When it jumped up and hit the wall, my laughter quickly faded. Maybe I'm damaged from childhood, but someohow my humor center separated the movements themselves from the poor dog's misery. Hope that doesn't mean I'm depraved or anything.

Exactly. There are a lot of those vids that I just dont think are funny. Dancing dogs is one. I imagine that would hurt their back if done for too long!
They had a Donkey Basketball thing at the high school. I couldnt even watch the clips on TV. It makes me sick and it makes me sad.(PITA picketed that one) And Im not really all that fond of PITA, they go too far but at ;least they do some good
.

Ridiculous comeback. Typical too.
You hit my sore spot Nobody, I cry at SPCA commercials. Id take em all if I could. As it is all our cats are rescue cats.
I worked in an animal hospital for 25 years. I could go on and on and on but some things are better to forget.
Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
Typical of what? I don't see what's ridiculous about pointing out hypocrisy. So some people don't think it's funny, that's fine, but it really does not give them some True Animal Lover moral high ground for cryin out loud. I bet every single one of these people who act as though they are horrified about those laughing would sit down and eat a chicken dinner even when they know that most animals raised and kept for meat are purposefully treated in an extremely inhumane manner, for no good reason at all. Please tell me why cats or dogs are any more alive and deserving of humane treatment than, say, chickens? It's worse when you actually participate in the abuse of animals (by purchasing the meat from these farms). You have a big ol wooden log in your eye when you try to act all high and moral and say someone is not a True Animal Lover because they laughed at a dog having an accident. Not that there's really any such thing as a True Animal Lover, because all of us do something that, at least indirectly, exploits or abuses animals.SleepyRose wrote:Ridiculous comeback. Typical too.
So what? How does this suggest anyone is a animal hater or abuser if they laugh at a dog having an accident? My dogs both came from the local humane society. One of them was a mere skeleton when I got her. If she woke up and ran into a wall I'd probably laugh then take her to the vet.You hit my soft spot Nobody, I cry at SPCA commercials. Id take em all if I could. As it is all our cats are rescue cats.
And actually, the same thing happened to me as happened to the dog in the video. Before I got the CPAP it was one night I (partially) woke up in a panic because my throat was collapsed, I leaped from the bed and ran into the living room and smack into a wall. It was one of those horrible but funny moments - too bad there was no camera rolling!
Of course sleep apnea is not funny. It's made my life miserable for many years and I'm sure that people here can appreciate that, it's still funny that I leaped from the bed and ran into a wall while in a panic trying to open my throat.
You all take yourselves way too seriously. It was a funny video, if you don't think so that's fine, but you are not high and moral just because you didn't laugh. Sheesh.

And, I'll repeat it again......... "it's amazing the different depths of empathy that people have."
Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes, and Nod is a little head. And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies is a wee one's trundle-bed; So shut your eyes.................
Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
I didn't find that video cruel per se. Dogs are very resilient creatures and that looks to be a good-sized dog. I thought it was humorous seeing him run in his sleep, but the slam against the wall wasn't so funny. I'm sure he's okay. Sometimes when children fall down, it looks a lot worse than it is.
Having said that... if the owner KNOWS that dog has an issue, I would think they would provide a more safe sleeping environment.

I just wanted to add that I am an avid animal lover and feel they should be treated with proper respect, but I also do eat meat, so I can't be a hypocrite.

How does that work? Do you farm or hunt your own meat? Do you get your meat from a local farm where you can see the conditions of the animals?tattooyu wrote:I just wanted to add that I am an avid animal lover and feel they should be treated with proper respect, but I also do eat meat, so I can't be a hypocrite.

Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
No, we don't have much hunting here in Los Angeles.
I have had some conversations with the staff about where the meat comes from where we shop and feel I am doing as much as possible, within our budget, to support local farms and not factory farms. It's not a perfect situation, but I do what I can. My wife and I eat a lot more vegetables now than meat as well.
Addition: I believe we do anthropomorphize our pets, because they are just that... "pets". I think most societies do that. There are some cultures that wouldn't dream of killing a particular animal for religious or social reasons, whereby another culture would gladly eat that animal for lunch.
BTW, we drove all the way from L.A. to San Francisco just to get our two guinea pigs (now one) from a rescue shelter.
