REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
http://www.tnlc.com/Lara/laura/osa/sleepwalk.wm
The video is titled "sleepwalk.wm", but looks more like REM Behavior Disorder to me.

I've seen many dogs whine, bark, twitch, and paddle their feet while sleeping, but never saw one do what happened in that video.

Any idea about whether that particular dog does that (relatively) frequently? (or is that why it was being videotaped?)rested gal wrote:http://www.tnlc.com/Lara/laura/osa/sleepwalk.wm

I think that would be a "key" to determining a "disorder".
In my many years as a dog owner (but no longer), I've seen the same things you described.....but can't say for sure about them going farther than that.
Whatever it was......that was one vivid dream to THAT dog!

Dunno. It was just a video that was emailed to me the way people pass along jokes and videos they think are amusing or interesting. Didn't amuse me. Guess it's making the internet rounds.Wulfman wrote:Any idea about whether that particular dog does that (relatively) frequently? (or is that why it was being videotaped?)

Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
I agree that was a fairly difficult video for us dog lovers to watch. Think if I owned that dog I'd set up some kind of a soft-crate solution for sleeping.
When we go into REM sleep our major voluntary muscles are supposed to become neurally inhibited to prevent that kind of problem. That sure does look like a REM behavior disorder along the lines of sleep walking.

RG, That is extraordinary - dad used to breed Labrador dogs & I spent my early years among them but don't recall ever seeing something quite like that.
Have seen dogs twitch in what is probably REM sleep but that activity is really acting it out.

Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
I used to have a dog that would "chase rabbits" in his sleep. I live in the country and before my son was diagnosed as allergic to dogs and asthmatic, we had 2 dogs that would sleep in the house but be allowed to run free during the day when my husband and I were at work. I know the dogs went on many hunting expeditions (and for that reason, they were bathed at LEAST once a week - more if they got "into" something that got them dirty before it was time for the weekly bath). Anyway, one of these dogs would often, in his sleep, "bark" - muffled and with his mouth closed - and his leg muscles would flex as if he were running. I could fully imagine him dreaming of being on the "chase" after a rabbit or squirrel. However, it never went as far as this dog. Was actually a bit disturbing to watch. Not amusing in my opinion.

I'm convinced that one of my dogs has sleep apnea.

It looks neurological to me. Very disturbing.

Hi Laura,
I would have to agree with SleepyRose, having had a PWD with epilespy and later cluster seizures, I would have to see more of this video, which I have had emailed to me a few weeks ago via u-tube, if in fact this dog's disoriented state as it appears he is in at the conclusion of this clip continued I would assume it is neurological defect or perhaps the early stages of a nuero disorder.
At any rate is very disturbing to see on u-tube.

It's about the moments that take your breath away.

As it turns out, the dog's name is Bizkit. And there are several other videos on YouTube showing Bizkit's disorder:

Quite a few follow-up discussions about Bizkit on YouTube. And there are about 174,000 Google hits discussing that famous pooch as well:

P.S. I haven't had the heart yet to view any of the other Bizkit videos. I really want to build that poor guy a spacious padded sleeping crate...

Re: REM Behavior Disorder in a dog?
I went to the Google link you posted, -SWS. I don't have the heart either, to view any more videos of Bizkit.
In the list of links on the Google page, I was sorry to read this starting comment from someone:
"Bizkit the Sleep Walking Dog. I should probably warn you that I laughed so hard at this dog that I thought I might have gone into premature labor. ..."
It sure isn't something to laugh at. Too bad (imho) that a person who would laugh at something like that is going to be a parent.
On another note, people laugh about people who snore, too. Lot of ignorance out there about all things sleep related.

I thought it was funny when it ran into the wall! Yeah, poor dog, but it was still funny.

Dogs are people !
They just go about their daily lives in a somewhat different manner.
If anyone ever wants to understand humans devoid of 'political correctness' just watch dogs.
One of the best shows on US TV is about the Hispanic guy (genius) who is called the 'Dog Whisperer',
to sort out problems with dogs in a household, he subtly sorts out the humans first. His show is all
about undoing human behavior to fix up the dogs.

Wow, it's amazing the different depths of empathy that people have. It is not at all humorous.
That beautiful Lab was confused as well as possibly sore from slamming into that wall. Who knows how long that has been going on.
It appears that sometimes even some of our regular posters act like Trolls!
