Re: puresleep
I, too, ran into this forum through a google search on Puresleep. I have seen a few ads on MSNBC for them and wanted to do a bit of research. I've never heard of CPAP or XPAP before and don't know what they are, but I have a snoring problem and I, like another poster, know that it occurs when I fall asleep on my back and my lower jaw drops down and my airway becomes constricted.
I've been wearing a mouth guard for years to prevent teeth grinding. The first mouth guard I got was from a dentist, a hard plastic guard that cost $350+, it's been a while so I don't remember exactly how much but it was a lot. After a while I stopped wearing it and my teeth gradually moved, so when I went back to wearing it the guard didn't fit. So, I had another guard made by a dentist (another few hundred+ bucks) and I found that I couldn't stand wearing the hard plastic device and remembered why I stopped wearing the first one. So, I went to SportMart and purchased a $4.99 package of two (2!) mouth guards that you wear for high school football and such. I fitted one, started wearing it, and since then, for at least ten years, have been wearing these exclusively. They wear out every year or so, so I just buy another package when I need to. It was a simple solution and solved the problem much better than the expensive custom fitted solutions that I got at the dentist. I'm writing this so that you know I'm pre-inclined to try something other than a dentist-provided product to address my snoring problem.
So back to Puresleep, I've read through all 9 pages of this forum and believe that it's worth a try. Since I'm a cheapskate, I was actually hoping for something cheaper than the $60 Puresleep device, but there doesn't seem to be a ready substitute. I noticed something available from Walmart from a couple of posts, but since I don't shop there (there's not one around here) I'm not going to bother with that.
I agree with a few other recent posts about concerns about shills. I have found Internet reviews of products to be extremely helpful and if you read enough of them you can usually ferret out the real ones from the fake ones or the ones from people who have an axe to grind. The overwhelming sense that I got after reading all these posts was that the ones from the guy on the couch seemed to be the most slanted against Puresleep or trying anything other than a CPAP or going to a sleep therapist, and the one from the guy from pur-sleep has an understandable gripe but that's another issue. My message to the guy on the couch is: drop your complaints about the shills, you're sounding like one yourself and having the probably unintended consequence of stifling this legitimate discussion.
I'd be happy to respond back with my experiences with Puresleep if people are still interested. It does seem like some people are having success with it, and those people do seem to have the same issues I'm dealing with.

Re: puresleep
I'd like to know if anyone on this forum has had any luck getting rid of sleep apnea by eating right, exercising, and losing weight? I have read that a lot of sleep apnea is caused due to living a sedentary lifestyle that causes the throat to become loose and fatty, causing the airway to be blocked by flabby tissue and weakened muscles.
Anyone?
Anyone?
Re: puresleep
That is certainly my issue...I have a GIANT uvula, GIANT tonsils and have gained 50+ lbs in the last few years...Certainly those things combined with how much my bottom jaw falls backwards when I sleep have EVERYTHING to do with my issues.

Re: puresleep
Guys, I have a CPAP and have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. I have tried for months to sleep through the night with the mask on, without luck. I never got the WOW factor of feeling more rested. I bit the bullet and tried the PureSleep mouthpiece. Let me tell you, since I started, I sleep throughout the night without snoring, as testimony from my wife. I awake MUCH more rested. I would recommend it to anyone that can afford the $60 for this product. It blows away the CPAP!! I have since discontinued CPAP, and feel as if PureSleep is the best thing I have come across in years!!

Good to know there are some out there having some success. I'm also a little suspicious of any spammer or racket. Case in point my sleep study was mild apnea and I've been on this stupid machine for 9mos and miserable. My doctor won't even discuss other options and the equipment person is just as insensitve to my problem adjusting. I did get a nicer mask out of them but that's it. That seems like a racket to me.
I'll probably try this puresleep thing so I can dream again. I only slept for two hours during the sleep study with all the wires. I ususally sleep on my sides and the apnea was more apparent when I rolled onto my back. Docs suggestion was to use a tennis ball to keep from doing that. I called and asked about a dental appliance and got the message it wouldn't work. But it seems like if it's only on my back wouldn't that be gravity pulling my jaw back and causing apnea? Seems like an appliance would help. Sorry for my grammar too tired to care or check.

Re: puresleep
No. Most likely it is gravity pulling your tongue and soft palate into your airway and causing a blockage.monkeybiz wrote:......... But it seems like if it's only on my back wouldn't that be gravity pulling my jaw back and causing apnea? ..........
Here is a product that will hold the tongue forward:
http://www.aspiremedical.com/tech_us.html#
And here is one that will stiffen the soft palate:
http://www.restoremedical.com/Pillar-Pr ... -it-works/
Get both products and you might have an effective treatment for your sleep apnea. As far as I know you would be the first patient to try both products. Good luck.

Re: puresleep
Oral appliances treat mild to moderate apnea with great success and are an acceptable alternative for severe apnea when patients do not tolerate CPAP. CPAP is still the Gold Standard. The problem with Puresleep is that it you do not know if apnea is treated or if a slient apneic is created. IHATECPAP.com gives a great deal of info on oral appliances.
Remember sleep apnea is a life threatening disease, do not take it lightly.
I created the site but please do not accuse me of spamming. I am passionate about the field because of how it has affected my family.

Re: puresleep
It is good to hear from you Dr. Shapira (For now I will assume that is who you are ). You will find that many members here are well aware that oral appliances are an effective alternative treatment for some cases of osa. As a matter of fact, I have been in contact with two dentists who supply them and just this week I have been referred to a third dentist who is less costly. I remain undecided because it is a gamble with a considerable sum of my money. Insurance will not pay and there is a high chance an oral appliance would not be effective for me.
I have to say I do not like the way you promote your business with the statement, "I hate cpap!". My skin is pretty thick so, as a cpaper, I do not take your promotion as an insult. The problem is my friends and relatives. Many of them appear to have osa but refuse to go for a sleep study because they have heard bad things about cpap. Your promotion of your business is contributing to this problem, although admittedly maybe only in a small way.
Can you tell us if there is any progress with getting more insurance companies to pay for oral appliances?

I think you are confusing Dr. Shapira (ihatecpap.com) with the shills posting here for PureSleep. I can tolerate your gross confusion about liberals, government and socialism, but let's keep our mudslinging about sleep apnea straight.

Liberals, conservatives ... they are about the same to me ... they both bailout big corporations, export jobs, and bankrupt the treasury .... I suppose that is a gross but fairly accurate description of our government of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations ... a one-party system pretending to be a two-party system or a two party system acting as a one-party system
As for socialism, there is not and never has been a national government that doesn't have some component of socialism ... every government has taxed and therefore every government has redistributed wealth in one form or another.

Holy Mackeral...who in their right mind would tolerate this crap? I keep coming back to see if anyone has posted anything about failure or success with this thing and I constantly see this "shill" bashing stuff. Miserable, to say the least, to read for a new member.

Make it simple. If you are interested in an oral appliance for treating sleep apnea, there are dozens of legitimate dentists in Illinois who can advise you on one.jrcmlc wrote:Holy Mackeral...who in their right mind would tolerate this crap? The Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP) is the most popular oral appliance for treating mild cases of sleep apnea. Find a dentist who fits these. Some dentists use more than one brand and claim to be able to predict which type is best for individual patients.
There are many knowledgeable cpaptalk.com members who have been using cpap for years and keeping their eyes open for a cheap and easy solution. I am sure if they find one they will let us know!
Even the marketers of PureSleep say the product is not a treatment for sleep apnea. Look for something else but in the meantime stick with cpap.
Have you looked into Babette's suggestions?
There are also some old threads in cpaptalk.com forum about TAP.Babette wrote:Hmmmmmmmmmm....... Joe, have you looked into a TAP? Sounds like it would be a MUCH BETTER alternative for you than the $60 boil and bite.
Check out this site for info on cpap alternatives, and look into the Thornton Adjustable Positioner.

Re: puresleep
I've contacted several dentists and have every intention of ordering a puresleep and doing a puseox test with it for a few nights to see if it helps at all. My choice is made, but I'd expect that 1 of 2 things will happen when I post my results.
A. I tried puresleep with pulseox and it kept me at an acceptable level all night for a week, and without, unacceptable. 37 people tear into me as a "shill" and people will call me a "dumbass"
or
B. I tried puresleep with pulseox and it didn't help at all, I had similar apnea to just plain sleep with no CPAP. 37 people tear into me as a "dumbass" and people will say "I told you so" for a week.
Neither of which is appealing to me, even if I wasn't a new user, but I'd expect more from this site with it's vast amount of knowledge and wealth of smart members. Shrug.
