Rooster's Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction
[quote="rooster"]Well just three days and the doc pulled the splints out this morning. He shot each nostril with a pressurized container of Afrin and an anesthetic.
There was one stitch which was looped from the splint in one nostril, through the septum and then into the splint in the other nostril. So he sticks the tip of a pair of scissors just into my nose and clips the stitch and pulls it out. That was a little more than ticklish. Then each of the splints came out fairly easily one at a time.
Now there was some sharp pain but it was only for a few seconds.
There is definitely more air flowing throw my nostrils than before the surgery, but I did not get that feeling of a rush of air that others have experienced. The doc said the turbinates are still swollen and will shrink over the next seven days.
The doc wants me to use the F&P432 traditional face mask for another week before returning to the Hybrid. He thinks the nasal pillows on the Hybrid might force enough air over my turbinates to keep the swelling from going away quickly.
I felt so good after the procedure that wifey and I ran a few shopping errands and had a nice lunch out. When we arrived home I took a nice walk around our block enjoying the sun and a little leftover Carolina autumn leaf color.
I am anxious now for all of this to heal so I can start experimenting with masks and pressures.
I also sent an email to the office telling them I will be in Monday morning. .

Congratulations.
Congratulations on your surgery! I had septoplasty earlier this summer as well as polyp removal, so I have some idea what you went through. I had splints too. They came out easy as pie, just like yours. Have you found your nose any more sensitive to scents and odors? Mine was for a while, but now not as much. I smell things now I haven't smelled in years.rooster wrote:Well just three days and the doc pulled the splints out this morning. Splint removal is a five minute thing, so I'm not surprised you had energy to spare. You probably will notice a feeling of having an airport hanger for a sinus for a few days after the swelling goes down.
I don't know if I'd be in too much of a hurry to get back on the hybrid after that kind of surgery. Let's not undo the good doctor's work! I understand about the full-face thing though.

Maybe you didn't experience that rush of air because your doctor took out the splints after 3 days and not after week.
I'm glad it went so easily, and that you had such a nice time afterwards.

After being out most of the day yesterday, I sat down on the sofa about 5:00 p.m. Then there was the realization of a very deep fatigue. I said honey let's get supper ready before I fall asleep. Wow, I did some sleeping and dreaming last night.JeffH wrote:.......

I won't be a bit surprised if you end up ruining a shirt and scaring the sh*t out of yourself with a nose bleed.

Here's whats waiting for you if you get one of those nose bleeds. They stick this in your nose and leave it there for at least 24 hours. I got one for 24 hours, got another nose bleed, and then got 2 of them in the same side for 6 days! Talk about miserable...rooster wrote:After being out most of the day yesterday, I sat down on the sofa about 5:00 p.m. Then there was the realization of a very deep fatigue. I can see why they would put that tampon up the nostril that is bleeding, but how does putting a dime up the other nostril help?

Today is day six of the recovery and I worked all day.
Well, "worked" may be a little strong descriptor of what I did. At least I was in the office from 9 - 5.
Or 9:15 - 5:00.
Less the 2.5 hour lunch.
I am loving this new job more and more! Second careers are great.
My nose is starting to feel cavernous on inhale. I guess the swelling is going down like the doc said it would.

You may find your nose whistles on inhale for a few days during the 'cavernous' period. It became very annoying for me. It passed though. I'm sure the doc prescribed a cool-airl humidier. As dry as it's been, I'll bet you're putting that through its paces.rooster wrote:My nose is starting to feel cavernous on inhale. I guess the swelling is going down like the doc said it would.

Thanks for letting me know that passes. I listen to the air rush of a cpap at night and was beginning to wonder if I would hear an air rush all day too for the rest of this life.DreamDiver wrote:.......

Sunday night I recorded 731 snores. Last night I shot Afrin in each nostril and recorded 21 snores which was my typical pre-surgery score. I will forego the Afrin tonight and see what happens.
Today I worked from 8:30 to 8:30 but this is sales, mostly dealing with pleasant people. (They pay me to do this?)

Your doc has probably already told you, but just in case, don't get hooked on the Afrin. She wouldn't let me use it more than three nights.rooster wrote:I will forego the Afrin tonight and see what happens.

Yeah, I know about Afrin dependency. Three or four nights in a row is all I will do.
I can tell the swelling has really gone down in the last couple of days. For one thing, prior to the surgery, when I used the neti pot water would slowly trickle out of the "outgo" nostril. Now it pours out of the outgo nostril as fast as the spout on the pot will allow it to flow!
Now my voice has a nasal sound for the last two days. Wifey and I want to know if this will go away?
