When I wake up at night to go to the bathroom, should I turn my CPAP machine off? I search the forum and could not find the answer to this question.

Mine is set to autostart and autostop. All I do is disconnect the mask from the hose (quick connect). Let the machine stop (well, mostly). When I return, reconnect the mask and take a breath or two in.

If you are not using autostart/stop, then I probably would turn it off/on. All of that said, I also use a very short time or no ramp time at all.

what tropic said. it really doesn't matter to have it shut off for that short of time.

would you be so kind, when you have the time, to fill in your equipment profile? that way it'll show up at the bottom of your posts, like mine. thanks!

Since I use a nasal pillow mask, I just turn off the cpap and slip the mask off when I have to get up. Works fine for me, mask goes back on easily, as does the cpap machine *smile*. Don't like having my mask on when I'm out of bed, anyways. On the other hand, if my mask was a Sleepweaver Elan, I might adopt a different strategy.

You don't say which machine you have. The machine I have has an 'info' display. And in its info display, the machine shows 'blower hours' and 'therapy hours'.

If you leave your machine on while you go to the bathroom, then in a year your blower hours will be a good bit higher than your therapy hours.

And in the long run – and since all machines have a blower-hour limit and since engineers talk of 'the mean time to failure' – if you leave your machine running without delivering treatment, then you will need a new machine that much sooner.

I’m not sure whether it is set to auto start/stop. I think it probably is, since last night I just took the mask off and the machine was not blowing when I came back from the bathroom. I’ll have to see if I can drill into the settings to determine whether autostart is enabled.
