The cruise line has been around since 1891. Over a hundred and twenty-five years, and they say this is the first time. Experience is not always the answer. They are required by law to have armed guards for just this reason. Remember Timothy Treadwell? Lived with Alaskan Grizzlies for 13 summers. I would say he was experienced. Not smart, just experienced. His remains were found in a 28 year old brown bear's stomach. Sometimes mistakes can be killers.hobbs wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 10:18 amYes, and if you read the post they have been doing it for 25 years and never used it. Someone did something stupid and the bear paid for it.MurrayNevada wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 12:30 amWhile you were walking with polar bears did anyone in the group carry a rifle?hobbs wrote: ↑Sun Jul 29, 2018 4:28 pmWhat kind of employees does this company hire? I spent (5) days WALKING WITH Polar Bears with a company that has been in business for 25 years and never had to kill a bear!

The number of polar bears outnumber humans in that area of the world (Svalbard). The area advises tourists NOT to leave the settlement without an armed guide/guard. The cruise line states that they were not there to view the bears. They state the only bear viewing they do is from a boat. I don't know what the purpose of the stop was, but can only attribute the encounter to poor luck on the human, and bears part.
Polar bears are probably already doomed. Mankind does not have the will or self control, to limit themselves. We will wring our hands and stick our heads in the sand denying that the climate is changing. Whether caused by man, or Mother Nature, the empirical evidence is there, that change is occuring
