Revised CPAPtalk.com Spam Policy

Post by johnnygoodman » Thu Jul 13, 2006 4:46 pm

Howdy,

The spam situation is getting out of hand and we're going to fight back.

I've empowered every registered CPAPtalk.com user with the option to "Delete Spam". If you are registered and see spam, click this link and it will disappear immediately. There is no longer any need to mark it SPAM SPAM SPAM and wait until the next admin rumbles through. You can delete it right away.

Although the post will go away when the link it clicked, it won't be deleted but rather will be placed in an admin system that we will monitor. If the post is spam, we will mark it delete forever. If it is not spam, we will restore it and the person who marked it spam will no longer have the ability to use the "Delete Spam" button.

So, if you an upstanding member of CPAPtalk and want the power to keep its streets free from bad guys you are now able to. If you abuse our system and mark non-spam as spam, you will get away with it only for a short while and then you will lose the ability to delete posts or be banned from cpaptalk completely.

It rewards the good and punishes the wicked. Perhaps we'll call this the "Getting Biblical On Spam" upgrade?

Enjoy

Johnny

SPAM is becoming a real pain, it keeps bringing up old topics to the front.

what ever happened with the security image confirmation idea?

like PayPal and other sites have implemented, pretty hard for a remote machine to SPAM/post a message without seeing and punching in that code specific to that particular messagbox. I know this software supports it.

This would still allow guests to continue post but it requires a manual input from the poster before message will be accepted.

It seems like when ever medications are mentioned which happens here alot on this board this site gets nailed and only attracts more.

The server should have access logs of who is performing the spam if not the IP address the MAC address of the NIC where it is coming from. My guess based upon what I've seen, most of it appears to be coming from the *.ru domain. The SPAM posts seem to follow a pattern with nameabc, namexyz etc.

Greetings,

Thanks for all the support.

I won't put the verification images in place until I absolutely have to. They are a barrier to registration, to guest posting and are a general annoyance. If this new spam prevention scheme fails, I've got one more trick and then after that I'll be forced into using them.

New Spam policy change

Post by fujiinator » Thu Jul 13, 2006 5:40 pm

Thank you for you change on the policy. Also thank you for allowing the people who use this site to police it on their own to an extent. I would tend to agree that the verification images are a pain and i myself would rather not deal with them if I did not have too. Unless you can set it to only ask for it when you are not a registered user. Then also having the existing policy would allow the administrators to get rid of registered accounts that are abusing the site to post spam and clutter things up. Anyway my two cents.

Thanks for the fix, Johnny, and for your faith in the registered users to be able to use this on true spam only.

Side effect??

Post by TerryB » Thu Jul 13, 2006 6:00 pm

I see a thread (I can't use my cpap)that shows with a last legitimate post being in May 2005. Did someone deepsix SPAM and the thread stays bumped?

ERROR, I caught it two times while the new post was in progress.

Sorry.

TerryB
