Do you use heated or cold water?

Post by tschultz » Wed Dec 29, 2010 8:33 pm

I would like to know if most people use heated humidifiers.

My humidifier runs in passover mode only. I was a bit surprised that I needed a humidifier at all because I live on the Texas Gulf Coast with a really high ambient humidity most days--we call it "air you can wear." But passover mode works beautifully for me.

Does anybody else use a cover on their humidifier?
I have a cover on mine, dont know if theres any actual benefit to doing this (as in heat retention) but it makes me feel better.
Play nice. What goes around comes around.

Yes--my machine has a cover on the humidifier to keep the chamber clean and dust free--that is why it is on there.
Hope this helps,
Carrie

Yes, with a climateline hose set at 78 degrees.

I chose "Heated Humidifier is set to ON with heated hose."

However, I hasten to say that I'm not using a "climateline" heated hose, nor am I using an "integrated" (made for a particular brand/model machine) heated humidifier.

The heated humidifier I use is a separate, standalone heated humidifier -- the Fisher & Paykel HC 150 humidifier.

The heated hose I use is the "sleepzone heated cpap tube" from sleepzone.com.au. That standalone heated hose (often called "the Aussie heated hose) can be used with any brand of machine, any model. So, I can use it with a ResMed machine I have, or with a Respironics machine I have...or any other brand, for that matter.

Same way with the F&P humidifier. I don't have the expense of getting another humidifier if I get a new machine that would need a new humidifier because the older integrated model won't "fit" the newer model. Comes with a short connector hose that can attach the F&P humidifier to any brand machine.

"Mix-and-not-worry-about-matching."
That's my motto when it comes to humidifiers and heated hoses...and masks, for that matter.

In the poll you did not provide for my choice: Have Humidifier/Don't Use.

Rooster---wouldn't that be: "Heated Humidifier is set to off"--?

Same, but my (DME set) hose is currently set to 30º C (or 86º F)... I've only had the machine for about 2 weeks (am a new dx) so I'll experiment with the heat settings when the weather warms up. (It's -3º C/ 27º F in Vancouver this a.m.)

At least one study has shown that upper airway symtoms developed in 56% of CPAP users. Of those with symtoms , 50% improved with use of a cold pass-over humidifier and 87% of the remaining patients improved with a heated humidifier. Symtoms could include respiratory mucociliary dysfunction, nasal mucosal inflammation, increased nasal mucosal blood flow, increased nasal congestion, and decreased static pulmonary compliance.

No. Quite a few members use CPAP in the passover mode - it is set to "Off" and has water in it.

You forgot to add: humidifier ON or OFF depending on the temperature/relative humidity. Some of us use passover mode when it's warm/high humidity & then later when it's cold we turn the humidifier ON to breathe warm, moist air.

The most sensible approach.

Yes, with a climateline hose set to 78 degrees and humidifier set to 3.5.
