Just saw this long article on Sunday from Susan Ager in the Detroit Free Press. Her experience with cancer and surgery. I thought it was pretty balanced and helpful:

Michael,

It's a good article, and the same cancer I had. However, my surgery involved a 24" incision and 5 days in the hospital, with a number of weeks of recovery.

Kira, I've not been on the forum for some time, no reason other than flat out with work and family. So it was lovely to hear of your good news. Congratulations. It sounds like you've had a hard time all around of late, and I'm sorry to hear of your recent troubles.

24" scar? Oh my.

Looking forward to hearing all about your Rocky Mountains adventure in the future!!

Grandmma,

Well, the cancer surgery was before I ever came to this Forum -- in fact, the pain from the surgery wouldn't go away, so they sent me to a pain management doc who sent me for a sleep study, and the rest is history.

Yeah. I don't recommend 24" incisions. They don't make life entertaining, at all.

I've been away from the Forum for rather too long, but had to pop back in to update this thread.

I've mentioned several times having had surgery for endometrial cancer on 7 April 2008. For my first two years, I had to have labs every four months. All of them were NEGATIVE.

At my visit in January 2010, the oncologist told me it could now be every six months. And that the labs could be done by my regular gynecologist -- that she (the oncologist) didn't think I needed her any more!

I have just received my results for the December labs -- NEGATIVE!

Only two-point-five years until I can be declared cancer-free... and take the dream vacation Harry and I have been thinking of through the Canadian Rockies... on the Rocky Mountaineer.
