Yes! Many, many categories! Many!

If we are going to be post-modern, and catch up to cool people, we will need MANY categories. In fact, I think WE NEED A 1-TO-1 RELATIONSHIP between categories and threads!

So - each new thread that someone starts will also get it's own category! Then, to streamline administration, we can either:

a) have the topic of the thread ALSO be the name of the category, so that you can just click through a few times to get to teh actual thread, or

3) generate a 47-digit random number/string, that the person wishing to view the topic of the thread has to type, from memory, to get access (for security reasons. new members will be issues a WWII code book and be required to memorize the 600+ pages of random numbers.)


Plus, one mega-category:

in honor of the catholic church, of course

Here is a mock-up of the opening screen, submitted for approval on this design-by-committee project. Can someone start a poll please to get feedback on the design? Can we get a focus group going maybe? Maybe the folks at the upcoming Atlanta meeting can add this to their agenda? We can all dial in via Skype to discuss!

I appreciate your response. It is one of the very few thoughtful replies in ths thread.

Comparing something to a poor example (yahoo) isn't the best comparison. Comparing _this_ forum the way it is (lots of OT posts) to one that is more on topic is a better comparison.

What _percent_ of forums out there on the internet have only _one_ category?

I visit multiple forums on entirely unrelated subjects, and _not a single one of them_ that I visit, except thhis one, has only one category.

Why is that?

If OT threads were all marked OT, that would at least help. The Love In The Forum thread, all 51 webpages of it, is not marked OT. There are others.

If there were fewer OT posts/replies in ON topic threads, that would help.

Those who make immature, rude, aggressive, and insulting posts do no good for this forum. They appear to lack either the will or the ability (or both) to discuss an issue rationally. Why is that?

I kind of like the idea of having a separate persona or identity that you would use only when going in to do battle, as it were.

Neither of these is a description of behavior! Are you kidding yourself? Just in case you really have no idea that you're not describing behavior, let me give you an example of describing behavior:

Mr. Smith frequently calls people names like "jerk".

This is NOT describing behavior:

Mr. Smith frequently is a rude jerk.

You'll know you're describing behavior if anyone who was not present would still know exactly what behaviors the person engaged in. "Jerk" or "rude" definitely convey a negative evaluation, but they don't tell anyone who wasn't present what the person actually DID.
