Hi all,
So, I have a Belgian government-issue standard acr38u (-cfc-bli) unit that has worked very well on the generic ResMed drivers on my old Vista 32 bit OS.
Never had any problems concerning the dreaded "card in use" conflicts etc.
Now, recently I upgraded my OS to Win7 64 bit.... and the trouble began.
After downloading and trying nearly all driver versions of the ACR site (including 64 and x86 combinations) I finally settled for the 1.6.1.1 driver (which is hidden somewhere on the ACS site)
but can be found here:

Upon detecting the USB connection, direct your setup to the location where you unzipped these files.
Do NOT use the ResMEd drivers if you have them installed, remove them prior to reconnecting the device.
Now the trick in Win7 to get the OS to recognize the cardreader as NOT in use, in my case, was NOT disabling any WiFi setting.
Windows uses processes and services, Win7 is no exception in that. Use Task Manager to open the services, click on the advanced button (right below) for services. The services are listed, along with their startup-behaviour.
Locate Smart Card service. This will be set to be running automatically on startup (default setting in Win7).
Why? I do not have a clue. Apparently Uncle Bill likes to have a process running in the background for all those millions of users without our beloved SC units.....
Now, the solution:
Set the Smart Card service to start up 'Manually'.
Exit all programs, disconnect the device, reboot, connect device, recognized hardware, point to the setup to the drivers you downloaded as mentioned above, start ResScan.
Insert your DataCard, check for lots of LED activity (blinking) and presto: device is now recognizing the card.
At least, that did it for me...
Now, I am off to bed, snorkeling away, knowing that I can once again read my stats tomorrow morning.
All the best from Amsterdam,
MadDawg
