Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
I foresee shipping duty in Secret Agent Girl's future...
I don't know where you bought it, but if the seller is willing to work with you, you may be able to get him to check the hardware ID of the reader and send you the right one. Otherwise I would just tell them that it didn't work for your application and you would just like to return it. And like I said before, I do like to save money and I *love* playing with computer hardware (!), but I don't like gambling on whether or not I'll get the right piece of hardware if even the model number doesn't sufficiently specify the device... Just get the ResMed unit and be done with it!

Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
Guys,
I hope I don't sound too dense here, but I really want to learn this stuff....
In SAG's first post, she said she has an "ACS pc-linked smart card reader, ACR38, p/n ACR38U-SPC-R". SAG, did you get that part number right off the card reader itself?
Then, in a later post (also on page 1 of the thread), secret agent girl stated: "In Device Manager, under Smart card readers, there is 'CCID USB Smart Card Reader' ".
So does it appear that the card reader device itself is mislabeled??? I believe that the CCID card reader part number is ACR-38U-CCID, correct? Yet, her computer thinks that's what's installed?
Also, not to hijack this thread, but I have a quick question for one of you computer gurus.... Sronsen mentioned earlier that the card reader shouldn't be repeatedly connected/disconnected from the USB port on the computer. Does the same hold true for the USB adapter, where the USB cable directly connects the ResMed flow generator to the computer? Does that need a "permanent" USB connection with the computer?
Secret agent girl, I'm so sorry that this has been such a hassle. I'm glad you posted this thread, so we can all learn from it. Hope everything's up and running very soon!

Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
If your model number is correct, it sure looks like the reader is mislabeled. Where did you get the ACR-38U-CCID number from? That may be of considerable use to SAG in getting a replacement without paying shipping charges.DreamOn wrote:

SAG - don't cut off the tail yet!
Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
Just to be clear, I myself don't use the card reader. I have the ResMed USB adapter/cable to connect flow generator to computer. That's why I was wondering if I should be leaving the USB cable connected to the computer permanently, or if it's OK to connect/disconnect all the time (as I have been doing).sronsen wrote:If your model number is correct, it sure looks like the reader is mislabeled. As for the ACR-38U-CCID number, I've seen it referred to in various places. On this thread, for one: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=46752&p=420391&hilit=ccid. And these look like ACS card readers: http://acs.esoftkey.com/smart-card-reader.php. ACR-38U-CCID is listed there.
The CCID version is apparently known not to work, as that 1.1.6.4 driver isn't recognized by ResScan. I was curious as to what's shown on SAG's actual card reader, since the computer apparently thinks it's a CCID. Where did you buy the reader, secret agent girl?

Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
DreamOn, there's no short answer to this question, so here goes... In Windows XP, I know that Microsoft does something I think is pretty stupid (duh!) -- they actually remember what driver is installed to which physical USB port on your PC. That means that if you connect a USB device and install it's driver on a particular USB port, every time you unplug and re-plug your device to a different port, you have to re-install the driver! If you re-plug the device into it's original port, the driver is already present and all is well. I suppose you could just plug your device into every USB port upfront and install the driver "X" number of times, then you could just move the device to any port and it would work without re-installing the drivers, but that's a pain-in-the-@$$... I don't know if this method of handling USB devices is still true in Windows Vista or 7, but knowing the way Microsoft does things, it probably is! On a Mac, drivers are installed for any USB port, so moving your device between ports is not a problem. To make a long story short(er), you're fine unplugging and re-plugging your USB adapter if you're always plugging it into the same physical USB port on your PC. Otherwise, you'll have to reinstall the driver each time you plug it into a different port. Got it?!DreamOn wrote:Also, not to hijack this thread, but I have a quick question for one of you computer gurus.... Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
Well, at least they're handling this problem in a helpful and efficient manner. It'll be very interesting to see what they send you and if it differs from what you have!secret agent girl wrote:I emailed the supplier and noted the discrepancy between hardware IDs of devices that don't work (i.e., the one I received) vs. ones that work (everyone else in the world). They replied that they were sending out a replacement today with a return shipping label. Didn't really address whether mine was mislabeled or what. Or how long it would take.
Thank you so much for that very thorough explanation! It makes perfect sense (in a Microsoft kind of way ). I can't recall if I have an unused USB port in the back of my computer. Probably not. I have always used the same (one of two) USB port on the front of the computer for the ResMed cable, so I'll just continue to do that I guess. I could leave it in that port all the time, but I suspect it would attract my cat's attention. She doesn't seem to do it anymore, but she used to LOVE chewing on cables!falvesjr wrote:DreamOn, there's no short answer to this question, so here goes... Sorry to butt in so much regarding something I really know nothing about, secret agent girl. When I re-read this thread later I realized that you had already done what I had suggested! (Not surprised, knowing how efficient you are! ) It sure is strange that the device is labeled one way, but the computer thinks it's CCID. Time will tell I guess....

Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
There is no reason/need to keep any USB device connected to your computer all the time if you don't use it all the time. USB connections are designed for frequent connection/disconnection cycles.DreamOn wrote:Just to be clear, I myself don't use the card reader. Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
Thanks, Bill. I do use the ResMed USB cable every day, as I download the data each morning. So it would be slightly more convenient to have it plugged in all the time. But because I don't have an open USB port on the back of the computer and my kitty may find the cable too interesting if connected to the front all the time, I'll just connect/disconnect as I've been doing.billbolton wrote:There is no reason/need to keep any USB device connected to your computer all the time if you don't use it all the time. Sounds like this one will work!

Re: ResScan won't recognize ACR38U reader
I know that if you start ResScan first and then insert the card, by default, a window should pop-up and give you downloading options. If this isn't happening, try clicking on the download button. If that doesn't work, it could be that the driver is still not properly installed or that the card is not aligned properly in the reader. It's weird how ResScan works, but it only really sees the reader when the card is inserted -- It then actually sees the card as if it were your flow generator. I guess they do it because you can program the flow generator via the card, so the more the card looks like the machine, the better for ResScan, I guess... Like I said, weird!
