cpap machine trying to drown me

Post by marybarcroft » Thu Dec 24, 2009 9:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have had a problem recently where my mask gets water in it and when I roll over it runs over and up my nose causing me to breathe in water and wake up. The machine is lower than my head, and I use a nasal mask. Any suggestions for what the problem is or how to fix it? I use a Fisher-Paykel Petite 406 nasal mask, which I love.

Either cover your hose, or warm up your room.

It's called rainout.

If those suggestions don't work, alot of us use the heated hose from Australia, affectionately called the Aussie Heated Hose. It works great. If you do a search, you will find lots of comments about it. I love mine.

You can also use hose management use something to hold the hose up above your head, but that will only help to a degree. Usually it takes a combination of things to fix it.

Welcome to the board, Mary.

In addition to the good suggestions above, I've read of people putting a small piece of absorbent material inside a mask along the bottom:
Sep 20, 2008 subject: My fix for rainout (condensation) in Swift LT nasal pillow to feeling_better for instructions and pictures - using string to soak up waterdrops in the nasal pillows assembly.

Although that describes a fix for rainout in a Swift nasal pillows mask, the principle would be the same for just about any mask...something to soak up the loose water inside.

I use the Aussie heated hose to stop rainout from the get-go:

Thanks to everyone. I didn't have this problem until this fall. The hose is covered. I'll check into the Aussie hose.

The heated hose is a real life saver. I'm suffering through the flu and the warmer moister air with no rain-out is a real blessing.

I had the same problem. If I lower the humidifier lower than 2.5 I wake up with the nose blocked.

I didn't have the budget to afford the asussie so I decided to try to fix the problem otherways.

I followed the suggestions Caseyb gave me. I bought what is named Insul-Bright and I covered the mask hose with that and with a fleecy sleeve. The 2meters hose is also covered with a jacket I made with fleecy and polyester inside the fleecy layers. I put the hose over my mattres and don't let it touch the wall (this is a cold exterior wall).

It has worked well enough until now, I have a bit of water at the end of the night but it doesn't wake me up. I had to add that I'm the type of person who expells a lot of humiditi with the respiration (I don't know why).

I wear an Activa, I'm planing to make some kind of cotton insert as the one restedgal shows on her link. There is a member who made a cute jacket for her Nasal Pillows mask, we try all what we can do.

I agree, it's a sum of things you need to do to get rid of the drowning attact.

Good luck and don't give up!

Or stop using humidifier and instead opt for room humidifier....if you keep the temp low in your bedroom, I think rain-out is inevitable....

Hey,
MY CPAP tried to drown me last night. I rolled over and it tipped spilling the contents of the humidifier into the mask and I wear a face mask that covers my mouth and nose. That was a true rude awakening. Any one else have that happen?
