I use a nasal mask but still worry about a power outage. I have my CPAP hooked up to a battery backup (UPS for computers works great), just in case. The other night we had thunder and lightning. I was just getting ready to dose and poof, the power went out. I woke up panicking looking for a flashlight.

No cockroaches, but it got my heart going.

I let my CPAP run for a while before I hook up the mask. Someone in here said they had a centipede in their hose once. They really sting. Ever since I have turned it on for a few minutes before I wear the mask.

Wow,

I hadn't even though of this - here in Oz (Australia) where I live, we have two rather nasty spiders - the funnel web & the trapdoor.

Not nice - one good bite & bye bye CPAP therapy (actually bye-bye world).

DON'T CLICK THIS LINK if spiders scare you.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~ednieuw/australian/Spidaus.html

The ones shown at this link are backyard spiders in Sydney. The 2 to worry about on this link are the red back (black widow in US) & the Sydney Funnel Web - the area I am in is their habitat.

Now it is these I don't want to find in my tube !!! Give me a cockyroach anyday

lindas88 (and others),

Sorry to disappoint you all, but I DON'T have any "worst moments" since I've been on CPAP.....just some of the typical stuff that most everyone goes through.....dealing with sleep doctor, dealing with insurance provider, getting used to sleeping with something on my face, having a sinus cold and cough about two weeks into this adventure, mask slipping occasionally, pulling off mask occasionally in the middle of the night for various reasons (cough, nose itch, thinking it's time to get up, etc.), showing "sleep doc" the printouts from the Encore Pro and MyEncore and have him wonder how I can be doing so well on half the pressure he prescribed (he questioned the accuracy of the reports), cancelling a recent appointment with "sleep doc" and told his nurse I couldn't see spending good money to have to give HIM information and be verbally abused and insulted (he's an obnoxious JERK).

See, just the typical stuff starting out on CPAP......

Crisp,

I couldn't make up something to rival your story.
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP! YOU WIN!
A great story for US to read, but I'm sure not a great experience for you.
I'm glad we don't have any cockroaches here in northern Wyoming (that I know of). However, I'm very well aware of what they are.
That being said, I'm going to start checking my hose for other "critters" (like spiders and such). I have an "agreement" with the spiders that live around my place.....you don't bother me (by eating other things) and I won't bother you.

Hope you don't have any more moments WORSE than that one.

Take care all,

Den

I am at work laughing so loud that they are going to wonder what I am doing at my desk.

This was the funniest and grossest thing I have read. I hate cockroaches and someone a while back said that before you put your mask on, leave the light on and start the machine a few seconds before you put the mask on in case of little critters.

Well, Crisp, I guess you MISSED that thread. I will never put my mask on again without making sure that there are no critters sharing it with me.
and Uncle Bob.......priceless.

Thanks for a good laugh and you would WIN the prize if there was one.

Oh no centipedes!!!
I have found a few in my bathroom and I hate those too. For sure, I will run my machine from now on to make sure.

DSM,

OMG........No way could I live in Australia, especially in the Spider's favorite habitat. Went to that site and here is the following for First Aid:

First Aid
Seek medical attention if symptoms persist. Collect spider for a positive identification.

Yeah, right after I am bit, I am going to chase and collect the spider for a positive ID.

Of course, I hate spiders too.....

Now that I was laughing so hard at work, I am now grossed out and had better get back to the "work".

OK, its not scarey, but.....

All this talk of stuff in the tube got me to be blowing out the tube better than ever before plugging it in, just to be sure.

We have a almost year old chihuahua, still in the playful curious gross-out stage of puppy life, and I was blowing air at him through the tube, since he accompanies me around as I roam the house and get ready for bed. Usual response of dodging the air and getting riled and jumping back that I would expect as he tried to figure out this tube beast. (he is only 7 pounds so its a HUGE beast). But then I changed to a tuba blast through the hose. He then stopped in his tracks and immediately started sniffing the end of the hose. He looked a bit dissapointed.

Amazing what puppies like.....

Cockroaches like Warm, Humid, Dark places . Don't leave your humidifier on !
I toll ya and I toll ya, (said in the best Butterfly McQueen voice) dump the water! All kinds of evil things like warm wet places. It is just water -dump it, let the chamber dry out, a whole lot less nasties will visit, you can always get more water.

This is where Rested Gal, who I consider to be da' bomb, and I part ways. DUMP THE WATER! Let the tank dry out and put new, fresh, distilled in every night. Just topping the water up nightly is not a good idea.

If cost of distilled water is a factor, figure out how much water you go through during a usual night and only put that much in the tank. I use a measuring cup and nuke the 200mls of water in the microwave for 20 seconds before I go to bed. This way, I can jump into bed with the water already heated and have not had to have water sitting in the humidifier tank, without the autoPAP blowing, raising the humidity level in my expensive little autopap unit, while I am waiting for the hotplate to warm it up (preheating) before I get into the sack.

Oh, I forgot...

Chrisp, EEEEWWWWWW!!!

I ate a spider once when camping. I woke, was in a haze, felt something crawling on my face and decided to give it a nibble. Then I woke and discovered that I had just chewed a spider.

I've never been camping since. That was about 35 years ago.

Oh Will, If I don't have time to switch the thing off how will I ever find the time to dump the humidifier . I'll take my chances. Have you priced distilled water lately . It went from .48 gal to .98 . Purified is .58 .

RG, look out for those Tennessee barking spiders . They like moist dark places too .

dsm...I hate spiders but had to look at those websites anyway...now I have to sit all night with my feet up.... I had friends who lived in Australia and they had to leave their house because of those funnel spiders....

unclebob....what you wrote was a good laugh...

Wulfman...your day is coming....you'll have a good story someday.

JudyAnn...centipedes, I think they are just as bad as spiders...

After reading all these posts I think I will check my hose everynight...at least until winter.
