Duhhh - I should have tried that.

No huhu! It's always easier to think of things when one is not affected by a problem

Frod,

Try reading this link and see if it gives you any ideas for anything you haven't tried yet.

viewtopic/t19988/EncoreProCardReader-troubles.html

If you have Encore Pro, have you tried doing a Preview of the card or erase or Setup?

Awhile back, someone had a problem getting their card to work after some problems......and then they finally got beyond the glitch and it was usable again. However, I can't recall who it was or how they did it.

I learned a lot reading this message thread. Thanks to all that replied. I have a question and a comment. I have a Respironics M Series BiPap Plus with the humidifier. The smart card option was not requested by my doc, and I did not know about these options when all my tests and prescriptions were being completed. Of course they would never consult the patient The smartcard and the data the software records sounds like a great idea. I would like to record and view all the data that is available so that I can be certain everything from the pressures, mask, etc. a working properly. I lived with OSA for too many years and want everything to be as good as it can get.
Does anyone know if I can add something to my existing machine? I am certain the insurance co. would not pay for a new machine, I received it April 26, 08.
Now for the comment. Everyone on this forum is very helpful. For years people have been suggesting the use of an eraser for cleaning contacts. Be careful, the contacts are copper with a very thin gold plating. Gold does not rust or corrode, but copper is a very active metal and will corrode. It is always best to clean with a Q-TIP and alcohol, Windex, or a proffessional contact cleaner this is available in electronic stores. The cleaner must evaporate and not leave any residue. Make certain the contacts are COMPLETELY dry before plugging it back in. This procedure will not remove any of the gold. Hope this information will help.

Thanks, Bill! That's helpful info. Someone once tried alcohol and said it worked well. The two or three times I've used an erase I did it *very* gently and a minimum amount of time. Will try alcohol next time!

Bill,

I regret to inform you that your machine (the M Series Bi-PAP Plus) is not data capable......and unfortunately there is nothing that you can add to it that would make it that way. If you want data, you'll have to get a different machine......however, if you kept your existing machine for a backup, that would be a good idea, too.

Bill,
If you can get your doc to specify on the script for a smartcard the DME will have no choice. That is the approach I would take.

You could try talking with your DME but he is as likely to take money out of his pocket as you are to hit the Powerball, I can relate to his not wanting to spend his money on you. So I would talk to the doc.

Slinky had some pretty detailed instructions for prescriptions, if you do a search.

Good Luck,
GumbyCT
ps. Technicians always use the eraser

Hi, Bill:

Respironics makes two versions of the reporting software: the provider version, called Encore Pro, and the end-user version, called Encore basic or some such thing. Unfortunately, Respironics no longer sells the Pro version to end users. The basic version will give you average CPAP pressure per day, but that's about it. Speaking as a reformed software developer, I can say that it is crap software. (I believe there is another forum thread on this topic).

Respironics has done their user base a terrible disservice by not allowing them to access the immensely pertinent and usable data that their machines can provide. Perhaps it's a marketing strategy to keep customers going back to their providers. However, when customers can not afford to do so, it makes no sense at all to withhold their own data from them. Anything for a buck, I guess.

Whether or not you like the software, it does provide useful information.

Right - thanks.

Yes, but to no avail. I returned the card today as defective and ordered some new ones. I suspect the problem will reoccur with new cards - I'll post updates here.

Thanks to all of you for your answers. Now I know that the best solution is to see the prescribing DOC and see what he will do. I am an engineer and like to know what is going on and get the best results possible. What a shame that some manufacturers like to provide no useful information to the people using their product.
