Smart Card

Post by Anonymous » Thu May 26, 2005 7:08 pm

Smart Card is a trademarked name by Respironics, and is a plastic card that resembles a common credit card. This media card stores data from your Respironics cpap, bipap, and autopap machines. Commonly stored data recorded by the Smart Card is compliance, total hours that the machine as been used and efficiency data.

To view the data collected, the Respironics Smart Card needs to be put in a Respironics Card Reader to be downloaded onto a personal computer with Respironics Encore Pro Software.

Durable medical equipment companies commonly use Smart Cards to track compliance and efficiency data. The Smart Card is also used for patients who need to have pressure changes. A clinician can mail a Smart Card to the patient and once installed, it will change the pressure settings. This is a effective way to expedite pressure changes.

My impression is that Respironics buys them OEM and shamelessly puts their name on it.

There's a good history of Smart Cards on Wikipedia, if you are bored and have nothing better to do:
