Shoulder aches from sleeping on one side
Shoulder aches from sleeping on one side
Hi,
Been using CPAP for a bit over 4 weeks; actually APAP for 2 of those weeks.
Anyway, my shoulder aches so badly, I can't sleep. I'm using a loaner-Resmed Spirit Auto with humidifier, and Swift nasal paillows, until I get my S8 Advantage.
Last night before going to sleep, took 2 Advil for a headache. No headache now, but it apparently didn't do much for the shoulder pain.
I really like my nasal pillows, but was wondering if I could make adjustmens to them so that I could move around more.
Thanks,
rachael

Hi Rachael,
The mask may not be your problem. When you start on cpap you sleep much more deeply and don't toss & turn the way we used before pap. That causes many of us to wake stiff & sore from sleeping in the one position for a long time.
Here are some links to tips for Swift users that may interest you.

I feel your pain. I always wake up in exactly the same position I was when I fell asleep. On occasion I have may arm slung up around my head on my pillow, and if I fall asleep like that in the morning my arm hurts so bad I could cry. My husband (sweetie that he is) will massage it for me.
I used to be a side-sleeper, but I sleep on my back pretty much exclusively now. When I slept on my side EVERYTHING hurt in the morning. Hard to make these kinds of adjustments when you have been sleeping one way for more than 30 years, but to me it was worth it to feel better during the day.

Peter, thanks for the very helpful links and welcome. I've chosen Trident's suggestion, and already have the hose secured; however, I had to use duct tape, as the darn velcro tab ripped off!
Pidgen, I'm glad you have your problem resolved. It would be difficult for me too, as I so love side sleeping.

P.S. Since the first message, I've been having problems registering, but will try another day.

Cat,
I had the same problem--I have been sleeping so heavily that I woke up and my entire left arm was asleep, and it is still a little numb. I also felt like I had been fossilized into the bed...lol. It was the first time in probably over 10 years that I have slept well...II can truly say it was "like a log".
I called my doctor on this and they said it was probably from sleeping so heavily in one position and my ulnar nerve was irritated. Enjoy your good sleep...

I've been a hosehead for a little over a month now. The first thing I noticed was that I'm no longer tossing and turning like I used to. I sleep so soundly that I think I only turn a couple of times now. Disadvantage - my back/hips are sore in the morning. I found out that taking advil before bed helps. I finally have the energy to go for a short walk during the day (outside of the walking I do at work) and am hoping this also helps the soreness.

Waking up stiff
I used to wake up almost frozen into whatever position I stayed in too long and it would take a major painful effort to move. Usually it was my shoulder and/or my lower back. Got one of those TempurPedic mattress toppers and haven't woke up stiff or painful since. Something about the way it supports or distributes pressure works for me.

Thanks everyone for your help and comments.
I didn't mean to mislead anyone into thinking that it was a chronic condition, but that night was the worst for aches and pains. I have had practically none before-must have been a particularly bad night, but was getting worried that it might continue.
A couple of weeks or so before CPAP, I ordered 2 Apollo pillows. They are expensive, but worth it in my opinion.
Here is the site in case you're interested. I have nothing whatever to do with this company, apart from the fact I ordered from them.
