Problems With CPAP Tubing

Has anyone purchased a lightweight CPAP tubing and had issues with it?

I purchased this one to have an extra hose and air leaks out back of machine when I breathe.

This does not happen w/ hose that came with my machine. Just wondering if anyone else had the same type of issue.

Are both ends of the new hose flexible, and look alike?
Does the hose look anything like your original hose? Or like the image?
Does the end fit snugly on the outlet tubing?
Some short, super lightweight hoses are meant to go from the mask to the long hose,
and will not fit the machine directly.

I got the hose from https://www.thecpapshop.com/. The hose is 6’ just like my current hose.

The ends of the new hose are similar to the ends on my current hose. The ends of new hose fit snugly on the elbow joint that goes into back of machine and on the joint that goes onto mask. When I run machine there are no leaks.

One note that I forgot to mention. Air rushes out of machine and mask only when I take in a deep breath. This is a reflex that happens a couple of times a night to me. It seems to break mask seal and pushes air out of the back of machine. This doesn’t happen with my current hose. I thought maybe it was due to hose being lightweight. However, it feels like it’s the same as my current hose in weight and joints.

If there is a leak due to a hole, you may be able to find it by running your moistened hand/finger
along the hose and around the connectors.
Check for a cold breeze, which will be easier to find with wet skin.
If the hose has a hole in it, you should contact the seller and return it if possible.

We cannot imagine where the leak could be.
"Out the back" is too general.
Can you specify exactly where the air is coming from?

Check to make sure Humidifier tank is fully inserted, and gasket is properly inserted in clamshell tank.

If the mask seal was breaking during a forceful exhalation it would leak around the mask.

I'm not sure if this is it, but my first CPAP was a Philips Respironics System One. There was nothing to hold the filter in the back of the machine, other than the opening for the filter. Whenever I coughed while using CPAP, it blew both filters out of that opening. I have cough variant asthma, so I cough a lot. Every morning the filters would be on the table, instead of in place. I ended up having to use a rubber band around my machine to secure the filters.

The inlet where the filter sits on your machine (ResMed) is on the left side when you are facing the front of the machine). There is a grate that holds the filter in place so it won't pop out . But hold your hand near that grate and do a forceful exhalation and see if that's where the air is coming from. If there is something close to your machine, the air might travel toward the back so it feels like it is coming from the back.

I think it leaks from either the elbow joint that hooks to the back of the unit or the hose that hooks into elbow joint. However this only happens upon breathing out forcefully. The blower is on the back of the machine and I hook the hose to an elbow joint and that elbow joint goes on the back of the machine.

I also checked for leaks in the hose as chunkyfrog suggested but I can’t find any. The hose joints are snug when I hook them up. I also checked to make sure the humidifier is in all the way. For now, I’ve been using the hose that came with machine and it seems to work fine. I only bought another hose so I have a backup. When I clean my current hose, it takes a long time to dry.

Thanks everyone. I’m new to CPAP and it’s been quite an adjustment. I thought maybe the hose being lightweight was why this was happening, but from the answers here it seems that is not the case. Maybe there is a small hole in the hose that I just can’t find.

The mask seal does break sometimes, but I feel that easy lol. Tonight I will check by the filter; maybe it is coming from there. I still wonder why it only happens w/ new hose though? Lots of crazy quirks happen using CPAP . Thanks!!

Try not using the elbow, just connect the hose directly to the back of the machine, as a test.

When I clean my current hose, it takes a long time to dry.

Over time, you may decide, like many of us, that cleaning the hose is unnecessary.

Is the new hose the same diameter (the hose itself, not the connectors at the end) as the old one? is the old one a heated hose? Did you adjust the host size in the machine's menu?

Thank you palerider. This was the issue. Everything is working great now. My current hose is slimline non-heated and the machine was set to slimline. The hose I purchased said it was standard size. When I went into settings and picked “standard” on the menu, the hose worked with no problems.

I started out cleaning per the instructions which is 2-3 times a week. Now I clean it once every couple of weeks. I do not clean it in the bathroom. I clean it in the kitchen in a basin I use only for the hose

Good point though that only filtered air from machine goes through it. I guess the doctor or the machine manufacturer are just being over cautious with the cleaning instructions. I do hate cleaning it. They got me paranoid saying to ensure I clean the equipment often lol
