Fluctuating AHI normal for new users?

I've searched the threads but didn't find any answers. I've had my BiPap a whole 10 days and I'm wondering if large AHI fluctuations are normal? The first several days I felt wonderful! I actually stayed awake ALL DAY! instead of wanting to take a nap every other hour. The last several days I've been fighting with leaks so I haven't felt as great. My settings are 19.8 and 15. My original sleep study recorded 50 events an hour and 76 during REM sleep. On my BiPAP I've ranged from 4.5 to 25 and averaging 12.8. Is that kind of thing normal for new users? It seems excessive but maybe it isn't. I see the dr on Monday so she can see how things are going. Thanks much!

Shouldn't fluctuate that much...most likely your pressures need adjusting.

this reminds me of a story about an american playwright watching rehearsal of one of his plays in london. there was, in the scene, a maid running a vacuum cleaner during the lines being run. in frustration, the playwright shouts "why is that maid vacuuming during these lines?"

he was answered "stage directions plainly show that 'the maid hoovers in the background', sir.".

the playwright cracks up and says "NO! that's a typo. it should read 'the maid HOVERS in the background!!".

I think that variance is a little excessive.

I suggest, getting SleepyHead, upload a few charts and let some of the experts have a look to see if they can see some reasons for the excessive range.

How well did you sleep on the nights when the AHI was high? Some of the variation could very likely be caused by poor sleep which raises the possibility of having sleep wake junk (SWJ). When we are transitioning from being awake to sleep, or from sleep to being awake, our breathing is often uneven. Your machine expects nice nice, even breathing, and uneven breathing will cause it to report false events. The same thing happens when we are wide awake because out breathing is uneven. As stated earlier, please post some charts.
