Okay...first in several installments to help you understand what you are seeing on that newly installed software.
Geared mainly for newbies. You veteran users will probably find all this boring and likely won't bother to read. Don't blame you in the least.
Once again...if you have a specific question about your own personal data or your reports...create your own thread because a lot of the forum veterans aren't going to be reading this thread. If you stick your problems in here it will get lost and not get the attention that your problem deserves.
General questions for clarification...are welcomed here but again please wait until I am done before posting (or start your own thread now). This one is going to take me some time to put together. I am going to try to cover each main important area of SH in a separate post within this thread. Try to keep everything in one spot. I anticipate needing to reserve several spots.
If you have something specific you want me to try to address...please mention it in my first Pugsy's Pointers...ideas request thread.. I will be watching it for ideas and questions. Here's the link.
Also please note...these thoughts are my thoughts meant only so that you can become better educated as to what you are seeing. These aren't meant to be dial a wingin guidelines. I really don't like to tell someone what to do. I would rather educate someone so that they can make an informed decision about what direction they want to maybe take and/or discuss with their medical care team whenever possible. If you are self treating for some reason (no insurance, no money, or whatever) again I just want to educate so that you can make an informed educated decision about what you want to accomplish and why. It's not my place to judge you or tell you that you have to go get an in lab sleep study to have any chance of success. Ideally we all would get good sleep studies (diagnostic and titration) done in a good sleep lab...but sometimes we don't get ideal and just because someone doesn't get "ideal" doesn't mean we shouldn't try to help.
For plain jane uncomplicated OSA...people can have success with self diagnosing and self titration...is it "ideal" ? of course not..but sometimes we don't get ideal in real life.
Just bear in mind that there are a whole bunch of other possible complicating factors that might accompany OSA or be the reason for feeling crappy. It isn't always OSA that is the big culprit. I wish it were that easy.
In regards to dial a wingin...making changes to the settings on your machine on your own.......
I don't want anyone to go dial a wingin unless they have a good reason to and are comfortable with what they are undertaking and go into it understanding what they are doing and why.......so I just wanted to make that clear.
I am talking mainly about pressure changes here. The other stuff like ramp, humidity, exhale relief..are typically considered comfort setting and most DMEs and doctors consider those items as patient can alter at will items. Some DMEs and doctors don't though...I think more as a control freak thing but that's their call. I think it's stupid...so comfort settings are fair game in my book.
Now pressures...this is where you want to make sure you know what you are doing and why and what might happen (good or bad).
If you have had a titration sleep study...give it a chance before you go start fiddling with pressures. Take the time to understand what you see...and there is some truth to "give it time"...you cannot expect to make educated changes based on one night of data. Heck, last week I had one night with an AHI just above 2 and the very next night I had AHI of 8.33...and I had made no changes to the machine or my routine at all...nothing. There was no reason, on paper anyway, for that ugly night. Sometimes we just have ugly nights. I like to blame it on aliens because there really is no logical reason for it...so aliens playing with us is as good a reason as any. We don't sleep the same each night. Sometimes crap happens.
My normal AHI long term average is somewhere between 1 and 2. I have some nights with below 1.0...I have some nights 3 to 4...and sometimes the aliens pay a visit and I get AHI in the 7 to 8 range.
So with those thoughts in the back of your mind let's see if we can understand what you see on those reports. We are going to target SleepyHead but the same data is shown on the other reports...Encore or Rescan or whatever. The data is the same so the meaning is the same. So and so leak on SH is still so and so leak on another software product.
Oh...there's a reason why I have the SleepyHead Glossary link in my signature. Mark and I took all the terminology we could find in all the manufacturer's provider manuals and dumped it into one glossary...so there's a little bit of everything in there.
Take the time to read it. It will go a long way in helping you understand what you see.
Like did you know that there is a slight difference in the event criteria for flagging between ResMed and Respironics? Yep, there is. It's a small difference in the amount of reduction in flow (air flow) for hyponeas and apneas. I am pretty sure Devilbiss has slightly different definitions also but I don't have access to all their definitions. These are minor differences and not worth putting under the microscope IMHO. So I won't dwell on them.
