I am only aware of ramp INCREASING pressure, when the machine is first turned on.
I turned my ramp OFF, so the pressure starts at 9.2, and runs to 13,
where it goes up OR DOWN as needed.
The tight range works best for me.
No low pressure to starve on, or high pressure to wake me up--
---just the coal trains rumbling by, like clockwork.

I think there's a little confusion (understandable) re the machine raising your pressure when needed throughout the night, and the ramp feature rising to meet your min. pressure setting when you first go to sleep. The feature is only called 'Ramp' as it does what I just said, but when otherwise referring to pressure going up or down, we don't call that 'ramping' as it's a different thing and can cause confusion. Most of us disable the ramp feature altogether within a very short time of starting to use Cpap at all.... and just mask up and let the min. pressure setting take over... we don't 'ramp' up to (unless the ramp feature is in use and set to it's own time limit, etc).

Glad I asked now.
So after "Max ipap and min epap", there's this and I don't know what this means:
min PS - 0
Max PS - 0

I just want to understand.

Jim

PS is pressure support, this is the difference between epap and ipap it makes it easier to breath out against the machine 3 or 4 is often a good starting value.

Jas_Williams, Would "3 or 4" apply to both min PS and max PS?
Thank you.

I strongly suggest you hit up the link at the top of the page over on apneaboard.com, there's instructions on how to email a request for the clinical manual that explains what all the settings are.

Anytime you're going to go into the clinical menu, it's good to have the manual, so you know what you're doing.

What is REM sleep? Can you explain what you mean here?

Jim
REM sleep is when we do most of our dreaming. It stands for Rapid Eye Movement. A lot of people have more events during REM sleep and/or when they sleep on their back. This is often why a pressure range is recommended.

For example, my pressure range is 11-14. When I sleep on my side, most of the night, I rarely go above 12. I could probably sleep with a straight pressure of 11 or 12 all night with decent results. But, when I roll onto my back (Or possibly go into REM Sleep, I never reached REM during my sleep study), my pressure needs go higher in order to prevent events. So, I get short spikes to 15, and rarely almost to 17. They are very short, and as I roll back onto my side, the pressure drops back down.

Also, in my case, the higher pressure does tend to cause me to roll back onto my side. If it disturbs me enough, I hit the start button twice to lower the pressure, but I also roll over. Most of the time, I don't remember it. But, because of this, it actually helps me stay off my back. Without the cpap and the higher pressure, I could stay on my back for hours and have much worse events.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

REM is how we know dogs dream.
Just watch their eyelids--their feet can move, too.
Some dogs seem to have awesome dreams.

Some of them, for sure.
Inconvenient IRL, but in a dream--most amusing.

If you don't think this is right, put a newspaper under your dogs head when they dream. Then the next night put that newspaper under your pillow, you will have the same dream the dog did.

It worked tried it on my dog, he was really active that night, I found out why, he had gotton his head stuck in a salmon can most of the night in his dream. Jim
