Special Electric Rates for CPAP Users

To all of you that think us CPAP users are trying to get our neighbors to pay for our electric, we just want a break on our bill out of PG&E's obscene profits.
They are not squeamish about raising our rates every chance they get and that is often here in California.

But, I thought that's why people have wanted to live in California......to vote in loonie liberal politicians and pay through the nose for EVERYTHING.
If you don't like the whole package of California, please feel free to leave. But, don't impose your beliefs on wherever it is you end up next. That's happened to Oregon and Washington state. Too many liberals who moved there and took their beliefs with them.......and ruined those two states. Then, there's Colorado.......

My city is one of the last holdouts with a publicly OWNED electric utility.
As a consequence, privatization has been tried many times--unsuccessfully, so far.
Our rates are among the lowest in the country--but we are in the crosshairs, I'm afraid.

I'm also left handed, I should get my neighbors to pay extra on their electric bill to pay for mine, at least 25% more than you get for CPAP discount on top of my adjusted CPAP use bill. NA, not really I'm a person that worked to pay his own bills, I don't believe others should have to pay my bills, I also don't believe it's right to force others to pay for what I need. Jim

Besides CPAP, I use a O2 compressor, it really uses electric, but I pay my bill. Jim

It is a medical device so you can get the medical device rate from PG&E. I think it's about 30% lower. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. The program is there for a reason.

Correction, having your fellow human pay for your utilities, so you can waste your money of non necessary crap is stealing, but to socialists and liberals it's entitlement. Get a job, help pull the cart for a change, have your family try it too. Jim

Sigh. Utilizing an offered discount it not freeloading - or stealing. It's no different than utilizing the senior citizen discount at Denny's. Should all seniors of good character opt to pay full price for their meals so that other diners don't potentially have to bear the burden of higher prices to cover the senior discount program? Please, give it a rest. I've applied for the utility discount before. Had a long productive career contributing to society from the age of 14. Never bought a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of alcohol in my life. And I live in California. All this judgmental painting large groups of people with the same wide brush is just plain wrong, and certainly not conducive to community building here. Why not give people the benefit of the doubt? How could anyone here know the person is wasting their money? Maybe they're just trying to survive.

What you fail to understand, XPAP machines draw little electric power, less that a dollar a month, so you can't see a problem of giving a discount of power bills of over the amount of the XPAP is a theft of money to everyone hooked to their power provider.

The rate should match the use, even a O2 pump 20 to 30 times more costly to run isn't covered for most, now a iron lung probably costs even more, but a XPAP, that's stupid cover. Got to keep that Obama Phone charged up..... Jim

Here's a link to the PG&E "Medical Baseline Allowance" page. This has links to the application and FAQs:

The Baseline Allowance is 500 kilowatt-hours which is about 50 times the use of a cpap with full humidity. The guideline clearly states this is for "life support" devices which includes respirators and oxygen concentrators, but does not mention cpaps.

Yes, I agree. This topic is ridiculous, given how little electricity a CPAP uses, even with all the bells and whistles.

Of course, if we were speaking about a dialysis machine or an "iron lung," that might be different.
