Power outages are a different story. But how often does the grid go down in an industrial nation? Like once in a decade?
I live in the Seattle area, and most of our power outages are pretty short, easily fixed within an hour or two. A few years ago, though, we had a huge area wide power outage. There was so much system wide damage that it took 3 days to get their main systems back up, so they couldn't even start restoring power until 3 days. Some outlying areas had to wait over a week. So, while it is a rare occurrence, when it happens in a large area, there is no reason to expect priority service. We have a generator. We rotate the gas cans so that we always have a fresh collection of gas for the generator. We have had two separate 3 day outages since getting the generator. We were just fine the whole time. We took turns letting the two freezers and 2 refrigerators run. The furnace fan gets hooked up the generator.
Everybody should have supplies and the ability to live without gas stations, grocery stores, and electricity for at least a week. When somebody big happens, it could be a long wait. If you are prepared, you don't have to stress when it happens.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Congrats, You and your Doctor have committed Fraud on the Power company and everyone that pays their electric bills. JimKemosabe wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2005 8:54 pmFunny you should ask that today as yesterday I visited the doctor to get him to sign mine. We initially had a difference of opinion on the question of "Is it life-support?".
I told him about my friend Donald Duncan Jr., who about a year ago coming home from a yo-yo meet fell asleep at the wheel. He and his wife died in the accident.
We used to tease Don about his snoring. He was famous for it. If you were in the room next to his, you were certain to hear it. I sure miss both the Duncans. I wish could still be annoyed at Don's loud snoring.
I told my doctor that I considered it life-support, not only for myself but for my wife and anyone riding with me or driving around me. He was convinced enough to keep thinking about it. So he called some of his doctor buddies and they told him that they'd signed the form for CPAP users. So he decided to sign mine.
When I got the form from PG&E, the PG&E person I talked with told me to put down "IPPB machine" instead of CPAP because PG&E is clueless about CPAPs and the IPPB machine is similar and they do know about it.
I wish you the best of luck.

Re: Special Electric Rates for CPAP Users
On PG&E's web site they listed a CPAP as life-support, don't know if it's since changed. Printed out the form, my doctor signed it. I didn't do this for cheaper bills, I did it so my power wouldn't be turned off, granted it won't help with wide spread outages. Now a back story.
We moved to another city, contacted PG&E to have the power turned off when the old house sold. Instead PG&E turned off the power for the house we just moved into. The power wasn't restored until the following day. Mistakes can happen.

Good for you! I used to live in California, and I wish I had been on CPAP back then to take advantage of PG&E's program. If it's there, why not take advantage and get your money's worth? People got dealt with an unlucky card having to use CPAP and are disadvantaged in so many ways. So take advantage of programs when you have the chance. You only get one shot at life.GTOJim wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 12:15 pmOn PG&E's web site they listed a CPAP as life-support, don't know if it's since changed. I didn't realize that. I used to avoid them back in the day because they were so expensive. You can still get free batteries with the coupons that Harbor Freight Tools puts out (with any purchase).Goofproof wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 12:25 pmToo Bad Radio Shack went under, you could get a free battery for your flashlight from them!crab-legs wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 12:22 pmGood for you! What a way to spend retirement years...spending the day looking for freebies. I frequently get bored, but would rather get out of the house. I've been on AARP for almost 30 years and aside from hotel/motels, I can't remember ever asking for a discount. My bad!

Re: Special Electric Rates for CPAP Users
My Dad never stepped on Lincoln's head, he would walk a block to pick up a penny. He taught me that, but now days all you get is a bad back! He always paid for what he needed, without expecting anyone else to pay for his share. I do the same, but I only pick up Dimes or higher, my back still hurts. I do keep track of all utility bills cost, amount and date for last 15 years, not many people even know their rate or usage. Jim
I don't count what the people that don't pay for what they use cost me.
