<<Well given that great mathematicians are as likely as great artists to have serious mental issues,.....>>
LOL....too funny. Given that in general, mathematicians have a proclivity, if not a necessity to access the more linear left brain hemisphere....and that artists have the proclivity to access the more loosely creative right hemisphere....you'd have to assess whether that three legged stool is canting more left or right in order to gauge its relative "stability", mental or otherwise. <laughing> The third, middle leg would just stand there singing that old song " Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am...stuck in the middle with you".
Not pokin' fun at anyone here, just joining in. My mother had a PHD in Economics and was also a college professor....and was a total math geek back in the late '40's and early '50's. If I asked her how to get to Beth's house she wouldn't guide me to turn left on Main then right on Maple. She'd start off with..."Well, Diva....the shortest distance between two points is....yada yada yada." Aaargh...for the life of me I just do not get higher math, and got tutoring when the veins on Mom's neck started popping during homework time. And yes I opted for Philosophy 150 in college in lieu of anything even remotely resembling math. I'm sooo glad that in my profession (retired) that I never had to see or use an algebraic equation!
**I will learn how to use the emojis and how to quote properly. Eventually, when I have more time.

although I think I got chided for it earlier in the thread, quoting is easy.. just hit the quote button at the top and remove everything you don't want in between the square bracked quote and /quote tags... for the smiles, just click on one on the side to insert it other formatting can be done by clicking the box over the composition window, and typing in between the tags that pops up. alternatively, you can type something, highlight it, and then tap the button above to put the proper tags around what's highlighted.DanceDiva26 wrote:**I will learn how to use the emojis and how to quote properly. use the 'preview' button below the composition window to see what it looks like before submitting it to be seen by others.

Thanks PaleRider. Noted and saved. Trying if this works.

Okay...something is very wrong here! I expected to log in and see people arguing, saying the, "you said, I said' thang; essentially duking it out like we are supposed to be doing in this thread.
But, noooooooooooooooooo..... instead, I see people being civil to one another and having a litte fun. This is wrong people! Stop it immediately! It's ruining the image of the forum. Don't forget... the Goodmans will see this and I don't think they are going to like it one bit!
STOP AND DESIST ... and start arguing immediately! If I don't see arguing, fighting, or at least a little bickering, I will immediately email the Goodmans.
~ Have a nice day everyone, and don't eat too much candy tonight. I can't anymore, it gives me miserable heartburn.

Just watch the end product when you use quotes. Sometimes the forum software aliens will sneak in and make it look like someone else said the thing in quotes and they didn't say it. Sometimes those people get their panties all in a wad when that happens.
Remember you can go back in and edit your posts and that includes the quoted part if it doesn't end up like you want it.

in the case above, it didn't work because:
Code: Select all
[ for the smiles, just click on one on the side to insert it quote][/quote]
the [quote] needs to come first, then what you want to quote, and then [/quote] at the end. so it should have looked like this:
[quote] for the smiles, just click on one on the side to insert it[/quote]
also, hit the 'quote' button at the top of a message, and then look at how all the tags are arranged... and that shows you how the message you were looking at was created.

Okay, trying one last time. I don't want to clutter up the board with all this niceness, helpfulness and sunshine and lollipops. So to stay on the OT Duke it Out topic: Geeze, PaleRider...I just claimed I'm an utter doofus in Math....and here you go making me do something even harder than Math, and making me feel like an even bigger doofus again in 9th grade Algebra. So THANKS for NOTHING.palerider wrote:DanceDiva26 wrote:If this doesn't work I'm thinkin' PaleRider just punked me with a Mad Math Monster on Halloweeeeen! Ya know what PR... there wouldn't be a rabid group that hates you so much if you spoke to people like you have in this thread today. I'm pretty sure I'm seeing a side of you that I've never seen before. Could be you are a decent person after all. Continue in this vein and we just may turn out to be forum buddies... that is if you ever take me off your Foe list.palerider wrote:no wonder there's a rabid group here that hate me so.

Re: OT: Time out and/or Duke it out thread
You'd be surprised at how much of mathematics uses the right, creative side of the brain, particularly for those of us who are visual thinkers. The problem is that we (the mathematicians) then have to work hard in getting the left side of the brain to craft the logical, linear reasoning needed to verify that what the right hemisphere *sees* and *knows* is TRUE actually is true.DanceDiva26 wrote:<<Well given that great mathematicians are as likely as great artists to have serious mental issues,.....>>
When working on finding a proof to a conjecture that was particularly important to my PhD thesis, the "visual" proof of why the conjecture was true popped up in the right hemisphere one day when I was driving across the Illinois cornfields driving from Bloomington-Normal back to Urbana-Champaign one afternoon. It took 2 or 3 solid weeks of "listening" to the two sides of my brain argue with each other before the left side finally sorted out notation I needed to accurately describe the visual image/proof that the right brain *knew* was true. The argument went like this:
Right brain: *PING* <Here's the PICTURE that proves the main conjecture>
Left brain: I know you (the right brain) can see it's true, but can you help me out? How do I label those vertices????
Right brain: *PING* <Here's the PICTURE>
Left brain: Yes, I know that's the picture. But what about the *labels* on the vertices?????
Right brain: *PING* <Here's the relevant PICTURE>
Left brain: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that doesn't tell me how to LABEL the damn vertices. And without labels, I can't describe this proof in a way the thesis committee can understand.
Right brain: *PING* <Here are the two relevant PICTURES side by side>
Left brain: Ok, what if I label the vertices this way ..... No, I'm still not seeing something ....
Right brain: *PING* <LOOK at the damn PICTURE I keep showing you>
Left brain: Shit, I have to label that thing on each vertex too.....
Left brain to husband (who is also a mathematican): I'm running out of integers in this proof.
Hubby: There's an infinite number of integers. You can't run out of them.
Left brain to husband: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But there's only a small, finite number of letters that are used to denote integers and I've used them all.
Right brain: *PING* <LOOK at the damn PICTURE I keep showing you>
and so on and so forth.
I can honestly say I have never been quite so happy as I was when the Left brain finally was able to say: I've GOT it! Here's how to label everything and then we do this and and this and this .... And the Right brain said: *PING* <Yes, you finally understand the PICTURE I've been showing you for 3 weeks>
