Yes, and yes. Here is the way I look at it. The purpose of vaccines is twofold. First and not the most important is to protect the individual. Society seems to focus on this as the only purpose and therefore you hear people saying they may or may not get it depending on their personal feelings. However, if one studies epidemics and pandemics and the impact of vaccines on protecting society as a whole, one quickly learns that the primary purpose of vaccines is to protect society as a whole rather than the individual. So, in my mind, saying no is not an option unless one wishes to add to the endangerment of our children, our friends and family, our larger society, and our nation as a whole. To me, it is my patriotic duty to get the vaccines and not a personal option.

Sleep apnea is a chronic medical condition which, thankfully, is easily treated. I know, I am recently diagnosed and treated.

Yes--there are subtypes of this flu...check with the CDC. One is similar to the 1918 as it causes the cells in the lung to leak resulting in drowning, Hospitalization and ventilation MAY save your life. TOO risky for me as I have COPD.

Sleep apnea has been seen in childhood and is a probable cause of ADHD, therefor it can be lifelong. Look for extreme fatigue without feeling rested after adequate sleep hours.

Most apnea in adults could be aggravated by weight (obesity), but could be silent (except for those whose symptom of APNEA is snoring) and undiagnosed.

If offered at work or my Dr. visit yes I'll take the shot. I won't go hunting.
Yes sleep apnea is a chronic medical condition. I didn't automatically think of it as a condition that makes the flu more deadly--but then I realized how difficult CPAP treatment might be with a good case of the flu!

Yes, I will get the Swine Flu Vaccine. I am a health care professional. I also care regularly for my two grandchildren 6 and under. I hear next year, my hospital employer will make the regular influenza shot MANDATORY. I don't care. I get one every year. Have had the flu three times in my life. It's miserable.
Yes, I consider OSA a chronic condition, although, I've been told in my case, I've only got a MILD case. In my experience, CPAP treatment has been life changing, and I won't be going without it anywhere. I'm considering septoplasty surgery. Never had surgery before in my life and I'm 49. Scary thoughts, heard good and bad experiences.

Hello WNC,

Here is a long thread about nasal surgery: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6078&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=deviated

I can recommend a top notch surgeon in Charlotte if you are interested.

Rooster, This is what H1N1 is doing to my O2 sats...I usually am always above the 95 with APAP and no illness. These changes are with treatment of my asthma and H1N1.

Yes, I got the regular flu shot AND the H1N1 mist yesterday. Did I want them? No. I had to go see my doc yesterday for a follow-up (another blood workup to see if things have started improving) and my wife basically told her that I am to get both no matter what. With her being over 7 months pregnant, we have to be careful, I suppose.

Today I feel like someone sucker-punched me in the arm, and I feel like crap... which is why I normally DON'T get the flu shots... this is always the result.

Cygnusia - I got the seasonal flu vaccine yesterday. Like you, I feel like "crap" today! That happens to me every year. I'm told it is a "reaction" to the vaccine so I live with it. I have to say that any flu I have had in all the years I have been getting the shot, has never been a bad flu, like I used to get when they were not available.

As for the H1N1, my doctor is telling me to wait a month after the seasonal one for that. I am not in what is considered the "high risk" group for this. He also said that the H1N1 was, for most people, a very mild flu. There are some cases that are not so mild.

He was also saying that, in his opinion, the vaccine is about a month too late and things have peaked around here. It may be that, when the month has passed, I may not need it at all.

Our ERs are overfull right now since 2 young children in Ontario have died, very quickly, with the H1N1 flu in the last couple of weeks. Parents of young children are very concerned.

It's just bad timing for me, I guess. I have a lot to do today and tomorrow (baby shower on Saturday) and I'd really just rather be in bed. Ah well, at least it's not the full blown flu... :\

Was just in to see my trusted PCP today about another matter today. I had already decided that I would opt out of getting H1N1 vaccine, so I'm afraid I did not seek details. But he informed me that the vaccine now available (the first of four different ones in the works) has mercury in it...to a level that he would not recommend it for any child with a developing brain. But he said that he took the vaccine himself and is not (obviously) concerned about the mercury level. I was. And confirmed that I would not do the vaccine available at this time. I absolutely do consider OSA to be a chronic medical condition.

Can you say anti-bodies? having the "Swine Flu", should give you much better protection against the "Swine Flu", unless you think the added Mercury will kill the virus, better that it kills brain cells. Jim

That's why the older population has less trouble with the "Swine Flu", most of us have lived through it one or more times.
