Off Topic How did you come up with your handle??

When I was in grade school, we had to each choose a poem to memorize. This one posed a challenge I couldn't resist

Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe
All mimsy were the borogroves and the mome raths outgrabe
Beware the Jabberwock, my son, the eyes that flash, the claws that catch,
Beware the jujube bird and shun the frumious bandersnatch

Considering that I can still quote it some 40 years later, I think my grade school teacher would be proud

Interesting read.

Mine is so old that it predates the personal computer, almost.

I was a D&D fan for many years. One of the first computers I worked on was a PDP-8. I fell in love with a game called Hack*. Over the years I have copied, ported, and found copies for every type of computer I work on. As I was a "hacker" for the NSA as far back as the '60s, my nom deplume was "the master hacker" - get it ? Hack the game, hacker as in computers, D&D character hacking with a sword... The 8 character limitation shortened it to mhacker.

The mb I sign with comes from Mr. Bill. I do a variety of cartoon voices and worked for RCA, owner of NBC and was given that nickname the day after the first SNL show. I do a very good voice for him and for Felix the Cat (in my mind they sound the same).

*Game is also known as nethack, rogue
Have versions for MAC, DEC-VAX, HPUX, DOS v1.1, More DOS, Windows, windows CE, Unix, etc

well....I am a virgo and according to the characteristics I fit the bill so I am A TRU VIRGO...also go by Navymomncali....son in navy...live in california...also go by armynavyx3..I now have 2 step kids in the army and of course my son in the navy....my husband is a carpenter so his handle is Geppeto

I've been using mine for many years. Abysmillard is a minor character in Mark Helprin's Winter's Tale, a misshapen giant who, "...loved butterflies, and secretly believed that he, like the caterpillar, would lose his monstrous self to become a bright and graceful creature that everyone loved."

Don't consider myself monstrous, but I like the idea of the metamorphosis. This is also reflected in my avatar (if I got it to work), who is Lord Yama, the Buddhist god of death (in this case, read 'change').

GeoDoug: It's pronounced "Gooeydoug." I graduated from The Evergreen State College, whose mascot is the geoduck. Evergreen regularly shows up at the top of the list for the best college mascot in the West. It's either us or the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.

(Never seen a geoduck? It's a clam with a long neck protruding from it. You can find it if you want to travel to Puget Sound. Or you can go to your local butcher. Or even easier, click here. All-in-all, very phallic.)

Being an Australian, the "Aussie" part of my handle is self explanatory. The "Grouch" part came years ago from my children who reckoned I was a bit of a grouch at times.

Morpheus is the Greek god of dreams. Google the arms of Morpheus and you get over 300,000 hits - titles of books, paintings, an O Henry short story, etc. In family lore, it was just good old solid, restorative sleep, a trip to the land of Nod.

Morphine was named after him. Me, I'm much more likely to end up in the arms of Ambien.

P.S. I loved Helperin's The Winter's Tale. Superb novelist with lousy politics...

Well..... I'm almost embarassed to tell. My handle started in college back in the early 70's when one of the "in" things was the Afro hair style. Even though I'm caucasian, I had one of the best and largest Afro's on the campus of the University of Illinois. It became my nick-name on my dorm sports jersey and was what everyone on my floor called me. Later, I adopted the same handle when I was big into CB's. This was back when we still had to have a license....... which amazingly I still remember! (KOA6457) Even now I still use the name with the gaming clan I am active with. Yes, 53 year olds like to game on-line too! There I go by OTC-Tumbleweed, where the OTC stands for Old Timers Clan because we are all older, mature(?) gamers.... In the "real" world, most folk call me Dr. J., another common handle I use as I am a veterinarian.

Babette La Mauvaise (i.e., Babette the Bad) is the name of my "faux persona" that I use when doing living history reenactments of the French & Indian War (aka Seven Years War) era.

Oh, "faux persona" means, as opposed to portraying a real person - which I do much more of. Sometimes you need to create a "compilation" persona that COULD have been at a particular place and time, but isn't actually a portrayal of a real person. Why? Because you can't find good documentation on WOMEN alot of times (grrrr....), or because, in my case, I'm "mustering in" just for a weekend and don't want to take on a larger, more significant role. I just want to play the average laboring/farming class woman and blend in as an "extra".

And it's the name I'm known under on alot of other online forums. I just figured I'd carry it here, too.

Babette seemed like an obvious nickname for Barbara to me when I started carrying it around. Turns out it's a Cajun slang term for a baby's pacifier. Hmmmmmmm........
