Surly Abond - hoax created by a cpaptalk member

I had a most welcome surprise when I saw a post by Surly Abond. It was so nice to know Surly has been doing well and is still reading cpaptalk long after his successful journey toward getting treatment for sleep apnea.

In more decent discussion forums this hoaxer would be booted out immediately. Why not here?

This may seem strange to you but people live and move all over the world. OSA is not a US phenomenon.

Surly Surely isnt unique. In fact he is sort of like Santa Claus. He exists in the hearts of cpaptalkers everywhere. LOL. At least he used to.

omg.

What a waste of "helping" time THAT was.

Oh well. Perhaps some other genuinely in need person who read it back then got some help from it.

Good thing I don't believe in dot-deleting, or I'd be busy for awhile.

Don't feel bad. Some people just get a kick out of deceiving others, and justify it with "no harm done." It was a smooth confession; I just hope it doesn't hurt other people who come here for help, and there are now a bunch of cynics who don't really want to get involved with something that may be a hoax. Remember what was discussed when it was revealed that calist was creating all kinds of "newbies" and asking questions? Some people thought it was better to answer and not worry whether or not it was genuine. To me, the onus is not on anyone to make sure they don't get snookered into helping a fake. The onus is on the people who ask for help to be honest.

It was not up to you (or anyone else) in the first place to verify that the request for help was genuine.

By the way, you didn't miss the confessions post; I don't think it was posted until after you started this thread.

Honesty is always the best policy, it seems. Thanks, RG and others, for helping the newbies. If they try to make you look like you got taken in on a hoax, the shame is theirs, not yours. I don't think I helped SB, but it's not like chrisp is someone I admire now.

RG,
You are the most respected cpaper on this forum and have been around for a long time. The purpose of "Surly Abond" was to be a learning tool. If everyone knew about him it wouldn't have worked. Wader knew and thats all. Surly Abond was a purely innocent person in need of cpap therapy in a place where probably little is known about it. He asked all the basic questions with no understanding of what he was even asking. The folks on this site were genuinely concerned and really wanted to help this poor guy in India. He asked rudimentary questions over and over and we helped him. The answers were true weather he really existed or not. Someone , somewhere learned from them. Everyone got to help and feel good about themselves. Whats wrong with that? You even posted the answers again when the guy from Turkey posted and Surly answered. He was an inspiration. If he could do it anybody could. Yes, sometimes I planted land mines like when Surly was deciding what country to move to. It was interesting to watch people list the great things about their countries.
I'm truly sorry if my scheme offended anyone. Especially you RG. Most of the folks here haven't a clue what this is about. To me it was a way to ask questions and have a bit of fun.

My apologies,

Chrisp

In this post I changed the avatar that showed RG photo. She asked to remove it instead of leaving it and becoming our queen.
Apparently, she prefers the NC Cardinal bird instead.

Seems so.

Oh well. If the anti-mouthbreathing chinstrap I ordered today works as advertised (this may be my day to be taken in by everything coming and going... ) then I'll have plenty of tape to put securely around chrisp's typing fingers.

I've always been fond of the Brooklyn Bridge, btw....

So why come clean now after 6 years? What precipitated this now?

Its been 6 years. Most posters are long gone. The Turkey post was a great opportunity to resurrect Surly Abond to give some encouragement. Then I thought it was time to come clean. Surly was a success and a great inspiration.

Have you ever watched the PBS show "Second Opinion" Where they diagnose a patient on TV using just their medical records. Thats Surly.

We all did a great job ! It could have been any of us.

"We" all could have been spending that time helping others on the forum who had genuine questions and truly needed help.

Rest assured, I'm Surly sorry you feel that way and I understand your reasoning. Appologies Abond.

Does this mean that you are not going to post my Sleep Study Results

RG you're the ONE.
