Chin straps and TMJ

Post by Grandma Judy » Sun Aug 10, 2014 8:56 pm

This evening, Chunkyfrog mentioned that using a chin strap if you have TMJ may not be a good idea. It was under a topic entitled "Masks". I am wondering why using a chin strap would not be a good idea if you have TMJ. I have TMJ and wear a mouth guard and this is the first time that I've seen this mentioned. I did a "search" for this topic and couldn't find any information. I'm seeing my dentist next week and it will be my first visit since I started using my CPAP machine. I'd like to have some information about this to present to him when I see him. Thanks.

Grandma Judy -- I'll be interested to hear what you find out. I never had a problem with TMJ until I started CPAP two years ago, and I believe my chinstrap use is the reason.

I think a chinstrap would be counterproductive with or without your mouth guard, as chin straps work by pushing your jaw back and/or your lower mandible up. Read these:

I have TMJ and was prescribed a chin strap but it aggravates the TMJ symptoms. I haven't been using it. Are my readings going to show that and if so how?
